Like numerous other cities and municipalities in Germany, the city of Paderborn also granted the Reich Chancellor and NSDAP leader Adolf Hitler honorary citizenship in 1933. Since this right automatically expires with the death of the borrower, a revocation after death is not legally possible. In order to set a public and official sign of remembrance of the National Socialist injustice, the City Council of Paderborn decided on February 3, 1983, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the so-called seizure of power, to formally remove Hitler's name from the list of honorary citizens City to paint.
