Neighboring towns are Brno -jih and Přízřenice in the north, Brněnské Ivanovice and Holásky in the north-east, Chrlice in the east, Rebešovice in the south-east, Popovice in the south, Želešice in the south-west, Nebovidy in the west and Moravany in the north-west.

Modřice has good transport links thanks to its location on the R52 expressway from Brno to Rajhrad , which runs on the western edge of the town next to the Břeclav – Brno railway line . There is a connection to the D2 motorway between Brno and Hustopeče via the state road 152 near Chrlice , the route of which runs along the left bank of the Svratka. Line 2 of the Brno tram runs between Modřice and Brno .

history

Modřice was first mentioned in writing in 1131 in a document from Olomouc bishop Heinrich Zdik , in which he called the castle his estate.

In 1200 the church of St. Gotthard was built and in 1274 Bishop Bruno von Schauenburg had the episcopal castle built. The vineyard has been traceable since 1306. Modřice was first mentioned as a market in 1340. In 1514 the place owned the vineyard, brewing, lending and lien.

In 1725 a fire destroyed the St. Gotthard Church. In 1727 the Kaiserstraße was built from Vienna via Nikolsburg and Mödritz to Brno . The Brno cloth makers, rope makers and shepherds built a walke in 1798 at the Mühlgraben . Agriculture and the cultivation of vegetables played an important role in Mödlitz. In the 19th century, businesses for processing the agricultural products of the surrounding area were established in the market. This included the sugar factory founded in 1850 and a company for the production of Mödritzer sauerkraut, which had a good national reputation, as well as pickled cucumbers and canned goods. With the inauguration of the railway from Vienna to Brno, Mödritz received a railway connection in 1839 and the station building was built in 1869.

Mödritz was subject to the Diocese of Olomouc until the abolition of patrimonial rule in 1848. In the same year, the Zwitta and Schwarzach were regulated . From the 13th century onwards, the proportion of the German population had increased, which was the majority at the beginning of the 20th century. In 1900 Mödritz had 2043 inhabitants and was the center of a German-speaking island in the rural area south of Brno. The old brickworks was established in 1880 and the Lederer brickworks were added in 1929. In 1933 the Coronas crown cork factory and the Kolofera hardware factory were established. During the German occupation Mödritz belonged to the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia . After the end of the Second World War, the Germans were expelled , with most of them having to leave the place on May 31, 1945 on the Brno death march .

In 1969 the vineyard was renewed. The Primál fish pond, established in 1517, was drained in 1975. The football tennis club , founded in 1987, became Czech national champions in 1999 and 2000.
