Fouilloy ( Picard : Fouilloé) is a northern French municipality with 1837 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Somme in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality is located in the arrondissement of Amiens and in the canton of Corbie and is part of the Communauté de communes du Val de Somme .
geography
The municipality, located in the valley on the left bank of the Somme immediately south of Corbie on the D1 from Amiens to Péronne and D23 to Villers-Bretonneux , is connected by a bridge to Corbie, with which it forms a settlement unit. The Mémorial national australien for the Australian soldiers who fell in World War I is located next to the British war cemetery on a hill in the area of the municipality.
history
The remains of a Gallo-Roman villa have been discovered in Fouilloy. The village is mentioned in manuscripts from the 7th century. In the Middle Ages it was a fortified suburb of Corbie. In the 13th century there was a leper house . The royal provost was relocated to Corbie in 1430. During the siege by Spanish troops in 1636, the collegiate church was set on fire. In 1789 Fouilloy became a parish independent of Corbie.
In the summer of 1914, Fouilloy was briefly occupied by German troops. From 1915 to 1918 it was one of the main bases of the British troops. In April 1918 fierce fighting took place on the heights around the community.
The community, which was considerably destroyed in the First World War, was awarded the Croix de guerre 1914–1918.
