Wailes is one of the few American rowers to have won two gold medals. He won his first eighth at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne. In 1958 he graduated from Yale and the following year he won the Pan American Games with Ted Nash , John Sayre and Jay Hall in the four-man without a helmsman.
