List of grape varieties in Italy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The list of grape varieties in Italy is very extensive due to the very long history of viticulture in Italy . Despite dramatic changes due to vine diseases (e.g. powdery mildew) and pests (e.g. phylloxera) around 1000 grape varieties are still registered. After all, 400 varieties are permitted or recommended in the DOC regulations. The most important grape varieties in Italy are the Barbera , Malvasia , Montepulciano , Nebbiolo , Sangiovese and the Trebbiano variety . In addition, almost all internationally known grape varieties such as Chardonnay , Merlot, etc. are naturally grown. The grape varieties permitted in a DOC are described in the individual articles.
