The Splash (proper spelling: splash! ) Is a since 1998 hosted a hip-hop - Festival . From 1999 to 2006 it took place at the Oberrabenstein reservoir near Chemnitz . In 2007 and 2008 the splash! as a result of the heavy rains in previous years and the associated financial crisis on the Pouch peninsula near Bitterfeld . Since 2009 the splash! a new venue on the Ferropolis peninsula near Graefenhainichen .
concept
In the early years there was a stage for hip-hop and reggae . In 2006 there were already two stages with various competitions and performances by the artists as well as two party tents.
The preferred styles of music are hip-hop , reggae and drum and bass . In addition to a large stage, the festival also offers tents for dancehall , drum and bass and hip-hop in which the Write4Gold battles take place (competition of different groups in graffiti art). The splash! Festival is also the venue for the intermediate and final rounds of the ITF World Championships for DJs - among others in the scratching category .
Another highlight of the splash! Festival is the soundclash, which has been held annually since 2004, in which two or more sound systems measure themselves against who can better heat up the audience in the hip-hop aftershow party tent. The audience alone decides which sound system is better received and decides the soundclash for itself.
Surname
The name splash! thought the makers of the festival based on the venue. Due to the location on the Oberrabenstein reservoir, the associated association with water and the meaning of the English words "splash" (sensation) and "make a splash" (cause a stir, cause a sensation), the organizers quickly came up with the name "Splash! Festival".
history
splash! in Chemnitz (1998-2005)
The Chemnitz hip-hop duo Tefla & Jaleel founded the splash! -Festival as an alternative to other festivals whose line-up did not convince them. On July 18, 1998 the first splash! took place, but not as an open-air festival as planned, but in what was then the Kraftwerk youth and culture center on Zwickauer Strasse in Chemnitz. Six acts performed at the festival, which attracted 1,300 visitors. Since the hip-hop scene was still small at the time, the initiators managed to get well-known artists to splash! to bring to Chemnitz.
In 1999 the splash! took place for the first time on July 23 and 24 near the reservoir in Oberrabenstein, whereupon the number of visitors rose to 13,000. The hip-hop stage was directly adjacent to the reservoir. So you could swim in the lake on warm days and watch the concerts. With the extension to two days, the venue under the open sky and the increased number of performing artists, the splash! an important festival for the hip-hop scene. The third splash! From July 21 to 23, 2000, 20,000 visitors were counted. The festival took place for the first time for three days and for the first time also had international artists in the line-up.
After 30,000 tickets were sold in 2001, ticket sales were limited to 25,000 in the following years in order to maintain the relaxed atmosphere of the festival. Over the years, the splash! from a small regional event to the largest hip-hop and reggae festival in Europe. In 2002 the festival was sold out for the first time with 25,000 visitors. In 2005 the festival took place from August 5th to 7th at the Oberrabenstein reservoir. There were heavy rains at times.
Financial crisis and restart in Bitterfeld (2005–2008)
Since the splash! 2006 again suffered from heavy rainfalls in 2005, the splash! Entertainment AG asked the creditors' meeting of the insolvency proceedings on January 9, 2007 for a settlement. According to a daily newspaper in Chemnitz, the debts amounted to over € 500,000. The Splash! Entertainment AG asked for support. A donation account was set up and a benefit concert took place in the “ Chemnitz Arena ” on November 3rd , which was attended by 4,000 fans and raised the total amount of donations to € 325,000 (65%). The Chemnitz Robert-Schumann-Philharmonie, Samy Deluxe , Beginner , Curse , Tefla & Jaleel , Azad , Spezializtz as well as Toni L & Torch , D-Flame , Dendemann , FR and The Sons of the Circle performed there without asking for a fee .
After the success of the benefit concert, the Robert Schumann Philharmonic donated a violin on which all "Splash Meets Classic" acts signed, which was auctioned on November 13, 2006 on eBay to a Chemnitz resident and brought in 1,350 €.
After the losses of 70% were covered by donations, it was announced on January 11, 2007 that the festival will take place, not in Chemnitz, but on the Pouch peninsula near Bitterfeld . Besides the Mozart Days, the festival was the only nationwide perceived multi-day music festival in Chemnitz. The Chemnitz hip-hop following grew steadily. That is why discussions began, such as the splash! The resulting gap in urban cultural life can be closed. Scientists from the Bauhaus University Weimar recommended that splash! to use the city's reputation as a “small hip-hop metropolis” to set up a hip-hop start-up center for the music industry in the former stock spinning mill. The period was also changed from the first weekend in August to the first weekend in July.
In 2008, due to the tense economic situation and the considerably higher costs, the organizers were faced with the decision to shorten the festival to two days or to raise the entrance fees. After a public survey on the organizer's homepage, the organizers have made the decision to leave the festival at three days. Two thirds of all respondents were in favor of this variant and so the splash! Festival 2008 took place from July 11th to 13th, again on the Pouch peninsula. Nevertheless, there was an additional stage right by the water and an improved situation on the campsite (among other things, visitors were allowed to take a car to the campsite for the first time). In addition, more emphasis was placed on side events.
Ferropolis (since 2009)
On July 1st, 2009, one week before the splash! In 2009, the organizers decided to move the venue from Pouch to Ferropolis, where the Melt Festival had been taking place for many years . The reasons given by the splash! Team were financial advantages, more space for stages, sport and culture (skate park) and better camping options (camping next to the car). Since then, the splash! Festivals have been taking place in Ferropolis.
