The City of Manchester Stadium
The 2007/08 UEFA Cup was the 37th edition of the European Cup and was won 2-0 by Zenit St. Petersburg against Glasgow Rangers in the final on May 14, 2008 at the City of Manchester Stadium .
mode
157 teams from UEFA's 53 member associations participated from the qualifying phase of the competition; for the first time also teams of the independent association from Montenegro . All clubs that had occupied one of the UEFA Cup places regulated by the UEFA five-year ranking at the end of last season were eligible to participate .
Standard division of the clubs into three groups. In the 2007/08 season there were two deviations from this division.
In order to keep travel costs for the clubs low, all teams were divided into three groups: Northern Europe, Central Europe and Southern Europe. To compensate for the odd number of participants in the groups, San Marino and Belarus were added to Northern Europe in the 2007/08 season.
In the event of a tie after the return leg, the number of goals scored away was first decided , then an extra time, if no decision was reached after two 15 minutes, a penalty shoot-out followed until the winner was determined.
As in the previous year, eleven clubs qualified for the second qualifying round via the UEFA Intertoto Cup . In the sixteenth finals, the eight thirds of the Champions League group stage joined the field of participants as usual .
Last year's winners FC Sevilla , who were the second team to defend their 2006 title, did not take part in the UEFA Cup because the club had qualified for the Champions League . Due to the vacancy, however, no new participant moved into the competition; instead, according to the UEFA club rankings, one club from the second qualifying round moved into the first main round and two clubs from the first qualifying round into the second. There was therefore no game in the first qualifying round.
