Pool swimming

Qualification criteria

About 900 athletes will take part in the pool swimming competitions. For each individual discipline, the FINA set qualification times, an A-Standard or OQT (Olympic Qualification Time) or a B-Standard or OST (Olympic Selection Time).

In the individual competitions, each NOK may start two athletes if both were able to achieve the A standard, or one athlete if the latter achieved the B standard. One team per country, consisting of a maximum of six athletes, may compete in the relay competitions. 16 teams take part in each relay competition, twelve places were awarded at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai , plus the four fastest relays between March 1, 2011 and June 1, 2012. Could not choose an athlete and / or none from one country To qualify an athlete, the NOK was allowed to nominate an athlete and / or an athlete for a competition. The number of athletes qualified via these so-called universal starting places should not exceed 150. Finally, athletes who only achieved the B standard qualified until the total number of 900 athletes is reached. For this purpose, FINA created an Olympic ranking so that the athletes who came closest to the A standard were considered first.

The A standard had to be achieved between March 1, 2011 and July 3, 2012, the B standard between March 1, 2011 and June 1, 2012.
