- Note: Hancock's award was not without controversy, as the soundtrack he produced only contained adaptations of existing songs and no new compositions. The composers of the original versions (not used in the film) include jazz greats such as George Gershwin and Thelonious Monk , whose songs were simply rearranged by Hancock and recorded with a band. In an interview after the award ceremony, Hancock's defeated Ennio Morricone even went so far that he said the Oscar had been “stolen” from him, which he “definitely should have won” for Mission . The soundtrack, which “only consists of existing pieces”, was “excellently arranged by Hancock”, but “ultimately not comparable” to his work due to the lack of originality. In fact, the English-language term for the category is Best Original Score and already implied at the time that it had to be music specially composed for the respective film (which is now explicitly required).
