Placements from 1970/71 to 1995/96

Since the 1970/71 season, the championship has been divided into groups and decided in subsequent play-offs ( called Liguillas in Mexico ). Therefore, the following list contains an additional column with the heading Liguilla in the second position , in which the performance in the respective season is documented: The abbreviation nq means that Chivas could not qualify for the Liguilla and Rep. That she was in the Repechaje have failed. VF means that they are in the quarter finals and HF that they are eliminated in the semifinals. F documents that they have reached the final and are therefore runner-up. M means that they won the championship. The ranking given in the third column refers to the respective overall season table, which has no influence on the championship as such.

A side note is the fact that Chivas never reached the Liguillas in the eight seasons between 1972/73 and 1979/80. The “lean years” are also known as “chivas flacas”.

Summary

From its introduction in the 1970/71 season to the 2017 Clausura, the Liguilla has been held a total of 69 times. In 29 cases, Chivas missed the qualification, with the 1970s, known as Chivas flacas (ailing goats), still a negative record in that the Chivasi did not even qualify for the Liguillas in the eight consecutive seasons between 1972/73 and 1979/80 could.

Guadalajara qualified 40 times for the Liguillas, which corresponds to a success rate of about sixty percent. Twice of these, the quarter-finals of the Liguillas were held in a group stage, in which Chivas took third place (1980/81) and second place (1988/89) and thus missed the finals.

Of the remaining 38 participations, Chivas failed twice in the repechaje (qualification), 18 times in the quarter-finals and ten times in the semi-finals. In eight cases, the Chivistas reached the final, winning and losing four times.

The most frequent opponent in the Liguillas was the arch-rival America, with whom Guadalajara had to grapple eleven times and could only prevail twice. Of the total of 22 games, Chivas was only able to win three, while 14 were lost.

The other big feared opponent is the Club Necaxa, which Chivas met three times in the 1990s and always failed. Only one of the six games could be won. In addition, Chivas did not hit a single hit with the Necaxistas.

Chivas met Toluca eight times and was eliminated five times. Other frequent opponents were Cruz Azul, Morelia and Puebla, who were each faced six times. “Favorite opponent” of these was Cruz Azul, against whom one could prevail four times (with a total of six wins, four draws and two defeats). Against Puebla, the balance of progress or elimination is absolutely balanced (three times each), although the overall balance (seven wins, two draws and three defeats) speaks clearly for Guadalajara. But whenever Chivas lost a game (there were three defeats in total), it meant the end. Against Morelia the record is negative because Chivas could only prevail twice and was eliminated four times.

Another common opponent was the puma, which was met five times. Guadalajara won twice and the pumas three times. An interesting aspect here is that in all three cases in which they prevailed against Guadalajara, the Pumas also won the championship. The overall balance is absolutely balanced. Both opponents were able to decide three out of ten games in their favor, the remaining four games ended in a draw.

Chivas met city rivals Atlas four times and local rivals Tecos twice. Except for the defeat against Atlas in the Apertura 2004 (0: 1 and 3: 3) Chivas was able to prevail in the other five regional matches.

Overall, Chivas played 142 games in the Liguillas, of which 49 were won and 55 lost, 38 ended in a draw. Of the 71 home games, 36 were won and 19 lost, 16 ended in a draw. Out of as many away games, 13 were won and 36 lost, 22 ended in a draw.

Summary

Of the 56 cup tournaments held so far under professional conditions (from 1942/43 up to and including 2019/20), Club Deportivo Guadalajara took part a total of 53 times. Chivas was cup winner four times (1963, 1970, Clausura 2016 and Clausura 2017) and the team lost the cup final seven times (1948, 1951, 1954, 1955, 1967, Clausura 2015 and Apertura 2016). Once again she reached the final group consisting of three teams in the 1951/52 season. In addition, Chivas reached the semi-finals eight times (1953, 1959, 1961, 1964, 1965, 1969, 1996 and 1997) and seven times the quarter-finals (1943, 1958, 1960, 1990, Ape 2014, Ape 2017 and Cla 2019). In 24 participations, the end followed in the first round, with the defeat in the 1994/95 season at the second division Atlético San Francisco weighed particularly heavily. Chivas failed ten times in the round of 16 and 15 times in the preliminary group.

After Chivas had their highest cup defeat ever in the quarter-finals in 1942/43 with 1: 6 against Atlante (the same result was there again in 1953/54 against Necaxa and in Apertura 2014 they lost to Santos Laguna 0: 5), the Chivas were eliminated Team in the preliminary round in the following four seasons. For the first time in 1947/48 Guadalajara was able to qualify for the cup final, which was lost 3-1 to Veracruz. In the five seasons between 1950/51 and 1954/55, Chivas reached the final three times, once more the final group and once the semifinals, but failed in all cases against the eventual cup winners. Also in the 1960/61 season, Chivas failed in the semifinals against eventual tournament winner Tampico before winning the Cup for the first time in 1962/63. After the 2: 3 opening defeat at the Estadio Jalisco at home against CD Tampico, a 2-0 win was achieved in the second leg, followed by five more wins with a total of only two goals conceded until the cup triumph. Chivas beat city rivals Nacional 2-0 and 4-0 in the quarter-finals and 2-1 and 3-0 in the semifinals against Oro, the most dangerous city rival at the time, who won both the championship and the championship at the end of the same season won the Supercup in a direct duel with the Chivasi. In 1967 there was another defeat in the final and in 1970 the second cup victory, which could be crowned with the only “ double ” win in the history of the CD Guadalajara. The third cup triumph came in the 2016 Clausura.

The highest cup victories came in 1943/44 with 8: 2 against León FC and in 1996/97 with 7: 1 against Gallos Blancos de Hermosillo.

The most frequent opponent was León FC, against whom Chivas played a total of 25 games. It is followed by city rivals Atlas, against whom 22 cup games were played. The biggest feared opponents are the capital city clubs América and Cruz Azul as well as Deportivo Toluca FC and Puebla FC. Of the 14 Superclásicos with America, Chivas could only win two (1-0 in 1942/43 and 4: 3 in the Apertura 2016). Also in nine encounters with Cruz Azul only two wins were achieved, which were also clearly 5-0 and 4-0 at the first meeting in the preliminary group in 1965/66. Chivas had to deal with Toluca a total of seven times. After six games without a win, Chivas managed to win against the Diablos Rojos for the first time in the seventh comparison on the way to winning the cup in the semi-finals of the Clausura 2016 . Of eight matches with Puebla FC, only two were won and five lost, including the 2015 Clausura cup final. Below is an overview of the results with all cup opponents:

Summary

So far, Chivas has qualified six times for the Copa Libertadores and participated in seven tournaments because the Mexican teams withdrew from the tournament after the preliminary round in 2009 due to discrepancies with CONMEBOL, but were able to redeem their qualification for the round of 16 the following year.

Guadalajara was eliminated three times after the preliminary round (1998, 2008 and 2012), twice in the semi-finals (2005 and 2006) and once Chivas reached the finals (2010).

The comparison with Brazilian teams is negative, against which Chivas failed in all three cases in which they met in the knockout round: in the 2005 semifinals against Athletico Paranaense, in the 2006 semifinals against São Paulo and in the 2010 final against SC Internacional. Of a total of seven games that Guadalajara had to play in Brazil, six were lost and only one won (2-1 in the 2006 preliminary round at São Paulo FC).

The balance against Colombian teams is also negative. There was only one win out of six games and all three games were lost in Colombia. In the only comparison with an Ecuadorian team so far, Chivas was clearly defeated in 2012 against Deportivo Quito (1: 1 and 0: 5) and in the same year they separated from Defensor in the only confrontation so far against a Uruguayan team with 1: 0 and 0: 1 Sporting .

The balance is positive against all other nations. There has not been a single defeat against teams from Chile (eight games), Peru (four games) and Bolivia (two games).

The record against Argentine teams is also positive. Out of a total of twelve games, Chivas only lost three - and each time against the same opponent, Vélez Sársfield (2-0 in the round of 16 and 2-0 in the preliminary round in 2012). In all three play-off matches against Argentine teams, Chivas had the upper hand: 2005 against Boca Juniors and 2006 and 2010 against Vélez Sársfield.

The most common opponents in the Copa Libertadores were the teams from Vélez Sársfield and from FC Caracas, which Guadalajara met three times each. While the record against Vélez Sársfield is negative with two wins, one draw and three defeats, Chivas was able to prevail in both play-offs. Against FC Caracas, Guadalajara played all six games in the group stage (1998, 2006 and 2009). Both teams remained unbeaten in their three home games.

In total, Chivas played 64 games, of which 28 were won and 21 lost, 15 ended in a draw. The goal difference is 93:79.

Summary

So far, Chivas has twice participated in the Copa Sudamericana, failing in the quarter-finals in 2007 and in the semi-finals in 2008.

After Guadalajara was able to eliminate the Argentine giant Boca Juniors in the Copa Libertadores 2005, they also managed this feat against their arch-rivals River Plate in the Copa Sudamericana 2008.

In the same competition they had already been able to return the favor a round earlier at the Brazilian representative Athletico Paranaense for being eliminated in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores 2005.

In contrast, one round later in the semi-finals of the Copa Sudamericana 2008, SC Internacional already proved to be the most feared opponent of the Chivistas. After Inter prevailed here with 2-0 and 4-0 (and thus ensured the clearest elimination in the history of the CD Guadalajara in an international competition), the Colorados also sat in the final of the Copa Libertadores 2010 with two wins (2 : 1 and 3: 2) and have an impressive record of four wins from four games in a direct comparison.

Again Chivas met in the Copa Sudamericana against the US-American representative DC United, against whom they prevailed in the second round of 2007 as well as a few months earlier in the semifinals of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup 2006/07.

Overall, Chivas played twelve games in the Copa Sudamericana, four of which ended in a win, a draw and a defeat. The goal difference is 16:21

The top scorer is Sergio Santana (five goals) ahead of Omar Arellano (three) and Alberto Medina and Marco Fabián (two goals each).

Adding the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana together, Omar Blanco leads with 14 goals (all in the Copa Libertadores) ahead of Sergio Santana with ten goals (five each in both competitions).

Chivas in the Copa Merconorte

The Copa Merconorte was only held four times between 1998 and 2001. In 2000 and 2001, Mexican teams were also allowed. Chivas took part in both tournaments.

Summary

Of the ten games Chivas played in the Copa Merconorte, four were won, four ended in a draw and two were lost (without penalty shoot-outs). The biggest victories were a 4-0 against Estudiantes de Mérida (2000) and a 3-0 against the eventual tournament winner, CD Los Millonarios (2001). The goal difference (also without penalties) is 19:13. The balance, which is reflected in the rating, looks much less favorable: the last four (not played) preliminary round games in 2001 were all rated 0: 2 for the opponent, so that Chivas lost a total of six games and the goal difference is 19:21 .

The top scorers were Ramón Morales, Alejandro Nava, Manuel Rios and Marco Antonio Ruiz, who were all three times successful. Ruiz was the only player to score in both competitions.

Summary

Of the 58 friendly matches listed above (including 2019), 20 were won and 22 lost, and 16 ended in a draw (not taking penalties into account). 22 of these games took place in Mexico: ten due to a trip to Mexico by the European opponent and eleven due to participation in a tournament held in Mexico, the rest against Manchester United due to the inauguration of the Estadio Omnilife and "handing over" the player Chicharito to his new employer. 18 games each took place in Europe and the USA.

The most frequent opponents of the test matches listed above were teams from Spain, against which Chivas played a total of 14 times and thus played almost a quarter of the known games. Guadalajara played against no other team as often as against FC Barcelona, against whom Chivas has an absolutely balanced record in the six known games: four draws as well as one win (4: 1) and one defeat (2: 5). Chivas played 11 times against 10 different Italian teams.

Other teams that Guadalajara has proven to have played more than once (two results each are known) are Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, AC Milan, Sporting Gijón, Partizan Belgrade, Dukla Prague, Slovan Bratislava and FC Bayern Munich. The team from Bratislava proved to be a real "fear opponent", against whom Chivas lost both matches and not scored a single goal: In 1948 they succumbed to the then Sokol NV in Guadalajara with 0: 3, on the trip to Europe in 1964 in Bratislava to the meanwhile in TJ Slovan renamed club 0-1. Chivas also lost both well-known games against Real Madrid (1: 3 and 0: 3).

There are seven known matches against German-speaking club teams: VfB Stuttgart (1951), Austria Wien (1953), Hannover 96 (1957), 1. FC Cologne (1988) and Werder Bremen (1964), which is probably the only guest appearance of the Tapatíos in Germany so far . Chivas played twice against Bayern Munich (1971 and 2014).
