The Bloodstock Open Air is a place held annually in August heavy metal - Festival in the English town of Walton-on-Trent , Derbyshire . The festival first took place in 2005. It claims to be the UK's largest independent metal festival . With the Kerrang! Awards In 2016 , Bloodstock Open Air was named the best festival.

Between 2001 and 2006 there was also an indoor festival, the first edition of which had just 700 spectators. The festival began as a two-day event on one stage. There have been four stages since 2009, with the third and fourth stages usually reserved for local bands and newcomers. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic , the festival did not take place for the first time in 2020.
