In October 1982, the AD Van complemented the commercial vans from Nissan , replacing the Datsun Cherry Van and in 1983 the Nissan Cedric Van . It originally appeared with two front doors and a laminated rear compartment. It was based on the B11 Nissan Sunny Kombi, but had a more simplified design. The 1.5 L and 1.3 L carburettor petrol engines E15S and E13S acted as drive, in addition to the 1.7 L CD17 diesel engine. Power was transmitted with a four- or five-speed manual transmission and optionally with a three- speed automatic transmission for the larger petrol engine. The rear suspension consisted of a simple leaf spring for a high payload . Low costs, light weight and a flat low loading area were the main reasons for the development and therefore the AD Van was designed for very simple tasks. The front-wheel drive, on the other hand, corresponded to the Sunny B11. In the United Kingdom there was the three-door panel van version with the 1.3-liter E13 engine and 60 hp (45 kW) with a payload of 505 kg. In July 1983, when the Cedric Van was phased out, two rear doors were added and the AD Van could now be ordered with an optional rear seat in the home market. This version was also marketed as the Nissan Sunny in some European markets such as Belgium and Austria as a glazed five-door hatchback from 1984. With the exception of small cosmetic changes, the AD Van was produced largely unchanged until 1990.

The second generation AD Van (Y10) replaced the Nissan Sunny B13 Wagon, which was offered in Europe as the Nissan Sunny California from 1986 to 1990 and was originally a Nissan Pulsar N13. From October 1990 the model was marketed with a different rear end than the Nissan Sunny California car (N14 / Y10) offered for export. The engines were the same for the time being. At the same time, the enlarged model replaced the Nissan Avenir Expert and the Nissan Bluebird U12 Wagon. In April 1992 the AD Max was introduced, which was designed in Europe as the Sunny Van Y10L, with an increased cargo space, two rear wing doors and a 70 mm longer wheelbase. In August 1993 minor changes were made with the now 4-speed automatic transmission and for the first time there was now a Wingroad model. This model called Wingroad JS was a 5-seater station wagon based on the larger Nissan Avenir Blastar with two-tone paintwork. In September 1993 the AD van was also introduced in Thailand , Taiwan and Malaysia as the Nissan AD Resort. A Wingroad version was also available in Thailand, but this was an AD Max. The AD Wagon was introduced in Mexico as the Nissan Tsubame .

In April 1996 there was a driver airbag as an option and for the first time the Nissan Wingroad was introduced as a separate model range. This had the 1.6 liter gasoline engine and 2.0 liter diesel engine previously only offered in the Nissan Sunny California. The Wingroad is based on Japan's RV concept station wagon that can be used as a mobile home , combined with a light off-road atmosphere and sporty design. So it was a spoiled version of the AD Van with more powerful engines and optional all-wheel drive . It also had a redesigned larger stern with a longer rear overhang.

From May 1997 the AD Van was also available with the engines of the Wingroad and also optionally with all-wheel drive. Ventilated front disc brakes were now standard on all equipment variants and the front windshield wipers were optionally available with a de-icing function.

In autumn 2001 there was a facelift with a much more angular front and a new Wingroad model was launched, with the all-wheel drive only being available with the 1.8 liter petrol engine. A completely new generation Y12 appeared in November 2005 as the Wingroad Y12. The AD Van only made its debut in December 2006. The model range now shares the platform with the Nissan Tiida . The Wingroad debuted with the 1.5L HR15DE and 1.8L MR18DE petrol engines and the new 1.2L petrol direct injection engine CR12DE. An Intelligent Key System was built into the Wingroad as standard from September 2006 and a GPS navigation package with HDD technology has been offered as an option since then. Both models are powered by a four-speed automatic transmission or an optional CVT transmission. From 2007 there was also a new Mazda Familia Van version and the Wingroad / AD Van has been the only station wagon that Nissan still produces since June 2007, when the Nissan Stagea was discontinued . Instead, Nissan has since introduced a range of new MPVs like the Nissan Lafesta , Nissan Presage alongside the well-known Nissan Elgrand . Since December 2008 the AD Van Y12 is also available with the E4WD all-wheel drive system coupled with the 1.6L HR16DE petrol engine. At the same time, production of the previous Y11 series ended, which until then had been built in parallel as CNG and 4WD versions. In May 2009, the standard equipment of the AD Van was upgraded to include a passenger airbag.

Mitsubishi Lancer Cargo since 2008

Since December 2008 the AD Van Y12 has been produced as Mitsubishi Lancer Cargo in addition to the Mazda Familia Van using badge engineering .
