Map of all club locations for the 2017/18 season

As in previous years, there were very early reports about a possible expansion of the league. In January 2017 it became known that the Croatian club KHL Medveščak Zagreb had applied for resumption. The club had already been active in the EBEL between 2009 and 2013 and had in the meantime played in the KHL for four years . This was confirmed shortly before the pre-season play-offs; the Croatians replaced the last remaining Slovenian league club HDD Olimpija Ljubljana , which had left the league after ten years and went into bankruptcy a little later. The Laibacher had previously struggled for years with payment problems and a barely competitive team. Due to the change, the number of teams remained the same.

Trainer

The EHC Linz dissolved its contract with head coach Rob Daum by mutual agreement after a total of six seasons and a championship title in the 2011/12 season and signed Troy Ward as his successor. Last year's finalist EC KAC signed Steve Walker after Mike Pellegrims moved to the German Ice Hockey League for the Düsseldorfer EG after just one season . Pat Curcio took over from Tom Pokel at HC Bozen, but was replaced by the Finn Kai Suikkanen in November .

mode

The mode remained unchanged from the previous seasons. A basic round with 44 games was initially played. The field of participants was then split up; the six best teams were automatically qualified for the playoffs and contested a placement round with ten games for the opponent's right to vote for the quarter-finals. The other six teams played in the qualifying round in ten games for the remaining two playoff places. In both groups, bonus points are awarded following the placement in the basic round.

The playoffs were then played with quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals in Best of Seven mode .

Reports of a possible bribery attempt

In August 2017, reports of a possible bribe attempt in the preseason became public. The Ljubljana goalkeeper Jeff Frazee reported that his coach had been contacted by an official of the Orli Znojmo club before the last match in the qualifying round , who at that time still had a chance of participating in the playoff, and at his "price" to influence in favor of the Czechs. After the matter became known, the EBEL took appropriate steps, which, however, subsequently (as of December 2018) did not lead to any results (announced to the public).

Season preparation

As in previous seasons, the Champions Hockey League was the most important tournament in preparation for the season this year . From the EBEL, the reigning champion Vienna Capitals , runner-up EC KAC , as well as second in the placement round, EC Red Bull Salzburg qualified for this. In addition, the teams contested a number of club tournaments.

Basic round

Main round

The Vienna Capitals continued the successful run from the previous season and started the season with twelve victories in a row in regular time, which was a new EBEL record. Only the EC VSV succeeded in their thirteenth game their first win against the reigning champions in overtime. Despite a few short periods of weakness, however, the Viennese held the first place in the table until the last matchday. Second place went to EC Red Bull Salzburg, which had a poor start to the season and only found its usual form in the second half of the main round.

The EHC Linz was the first pursuer of the Capitals for a large part of the season and alternated in this role with the EC KAC. In the latter, the performances of the legionnaires Jon Rheault and Julian Talbot , who had just joined the team before the season, were particularly disappointing , so that Andrew Kozek and Nick St. Pierre had to be brought in as reinforcements during the season .

HC Innsbruck and returnees Medveščak Zagreb established themselves in the middle of the table, with the latter quickly parting with goalkeeper Gašper Krošelj . A little later, coach Connor Cameron was also replaced by EBEL-experienced Douglas Bradley , but this improved performance only moderately in connection with the only average goalkeeper Kevin Carr .

The Dornbirn Bulldogs had to struggle with defensive problems from the start of the season, to which the club responded by terminating the contract of French goalkeeper Ronan Quemener . His successor Rasmus Rinne turned out to be a significant improvement, so that the Bulldogs were in the top six in the meantime, but could not keep this good place in the table until the end.

The Graz 99ers could not maintain the level after a passable start and fell back in the table. The reaction was at the end of the main round with the dismissal of goalkeeper Hannu Toivonen , who could not convince. He was replaced by Andrew Engelage , but this did not result in any significant improvement.

HC Bozen started the season with little success and ended up in the last place in the table. The club's management reacted by replacing coach Pat Curcio with the Finn Kai Suikkanen , who restructured the team. Goalkeeper Marcel Melicherčík was also replaced by Pekka Tuokkola , who had previously helped out at the Vienna Capitals. It was not possible to reach the top six, but the team's performance stabilized towards the end of the regular round.

The Hungarian club SAPA Fehérvár AV19 could not convince the whole season, which only improved a bit with the signing of Mac Carruth in goal. However, since the season had already started poorly (of the first 15 encounters, the team could only win four and collect 10 points), a playoff spot remained out of reach even after coach Benoît Laporte was replaced by Hannu Järvenpää .

The EC VSV did not find their form throughout the regular season, which ultimately culminated in the dismissal of coach Greg Holst . His successor Markus Peintner was also unable to set new accents, so the club finished the regular round in penultimate place. In the end, HC Orli Znojmo was at the bottom of the league, who had been able to hold their own in the top half of the table for the first half of the regular season. Several long series of defeats let the team fall further and further.

Quarter finals

Vienna Capitals - HC Innsbruck

The series between the Capitals and HC Innsbruck turned out to be closer than had been expected in the run-up to the clear opening win of the reigning champions. The Capitals were only able to win the following two games in overtime, whereupon Innsbruck put the series 2: 3 with two wins in a row. Also responsible for the close series was the absence of Capitals top striker Riley Holzapfel , who was injured in the second encounter and was absent for the rest of the series. Nevertheless, the Capitals prevented the series equalization on Tyrolean ice and won the series 4: 2, although they temporarily gave up a 2-0 lead and could only decide the game in the last five minutes.

EC Red Bull Salzburg - Dornbirn Bulldogs

The series of Salzburg against Dornbirn was almost identical to that of the Capitals. Here, too, the Salzburg team was able to gain an interim 3-0 series lead, whereupon the Vorarlberg team made it 2: 3 with two wins in a row. Goalkeeper Rasmus Rinne in particular proved to be a guarantee of success for Dornbirn, while Salzburg was tactically clumsy. Only the sixth game showed the expected dominance of the bulls; with a 6-2 away win they made it to the semi-finals.

EHC Black Wings Linz - KHL Medveščak Zagreb

In the run-up, the Linz team had assumed a clear series win; However, Zagreb surprised and was able to win the two opening games - the second with a clear result of 6-2. Only in the following period did the Upper Austrians find their way into the series and clearly won 8: 2 and 8: 4, with the Croatians replacing goalkeeper Kevin Carr with the backup Vilim Rosandić, who was very successful this season . The last two encounters were closer again, but the Linz team did not allow Medveščak to win again and so moved into the semi-finals.

EC KAC - HC Bolzano

The EC KAC series against HC Bozen had been judged in advance to be open with slight advantages for the KAC, as the Klagenfurters had not convinced over the season and Bozen had only qualified for the playoffs from the table basement in the last game . The Bolzano team won an opening win away from home, but the KAC regained home rights with two consecutive wins. After that, the series was extremely even - three of the six games went into overtime - with Bozen proving to be extremely disciplined tactically. In the end, game six brought the decision with a home win for Bolzano.

Semifinals

Vienna Capitals - HC Bozen

After Bolzano had won the quarter-finals against EC KAC, the prognoses for the series against the Capitals differed, although in general a victory for the Viennese was expected. With a clear 4-0 in the first game, this impression was initially confirmed. Bolzano, however, once again proved to be disciplined and was able to turn the series thanks to a team effort. In the third game they only managed to equalize in the last few seconds, followed by an overtime win. The Capitals lost another important player in the same game with top scorer Rafael Rotter . The fourth game clearly showed the efficiency of the Italians: with three goals scored by powerplayers, they won the match 5-2, although the goal scoring ratio was 19:51 in favor of the Viennese. The fifth game brought the decision in the series thanks to the Bolzano defense around goalkeeper Pekka Tuokkola with a narrow 2-1 win.

EC Red Bull Salzburg - EHC Black Wings Linz

The series between Salzburg and Linz was more balanced with a series of home wins. Only the sixth game was won by Salzburg away from home and the series was decided 4-2. While Linz impressed with a good exploitation of chances and a Michael Ouzas who, in contrast to previous years in the playoffs, looked secure in goal, Salzburg's individual moves by John Hughes and Rob Schremp were particularly striking. Since the Capitals were defeated by the Bolzano in the second series, Salzburg was also established as Austrian champions at an early stage.

final

The final series of Salzburg against Bolzano represented a new edition of the final from the 2013/14 season . Bolzano was able to call up the virtues shown in the previous series and proved to be tactically disciplined and defensively secure. In particular, the consistently played Neutral Zone Trap left the Salzburg offensive, which was built around exceptional individual players, only a few opportunities to get into the attacking third in a controlled manner and, conversely, led to numerous counterattacks and scoring chances for Bolzano. So the series was correspondingly close, even though Bolzano was able to force the decider in the sixth encounter with a clear 6: 3 win. In the seventh game, Bozen temporarily pulled away to 3-0, while Salzburg did not get into the game. The first goal was only achieved five minutes before the end of the game. Bernhard Starkbaum then left the Salzburg gate early; with six outfield players the goal was scored one and a half minutes before the end, but Bolzano was able to save the lead over time and thus win his second league title.
