The list of the commercially most successful Christmas sound carriers in Germany is an overview of all sound carriers that refer to Christmas or the Christmas season and can prove a commercial success. Commercial is associated with entry into the official German album or single charts or with verifiably awarded gold and platinum awards .
Notes on interpreting the statistics listed
General information
This list shows all Christmas discs that made it into the official German album or single charts , or that have been shown to have received gold or platinum awards . Christmas sound carriers are those who deal with the topics of Christmas or the Christmas season and contain Christmas carols . A Christmas carol is a song that is sung for Christmas because the lyrics are related to the holiday. Songs that only contain a term associated with Christmas in their text, without the piece making any reference to Christmas in general, are not considered. But there are also exceptions such as Hallelujah or The Power of Love , which were not originally classic Christmas carols, but enjoy a special status at Christmas time and are for many people directly associated with Christmas and sung especially at Christmas time. Sound carriers that were released at Christmas time, but do not reflect any related content, are also not taken into account. Decisive for the recording is the content of the sound carrier and not the period of publication. In addition, no special editions with title extensions such as "Christmas Edition" are listed, since these are marketing re-releases, the content of which usually has nothing to do with Christmas.
The sound carriers are divided into music albums , songs and video albums . The sound carriers can be found in the tables in descending order according to the date of their first publication. In the case of songs, the release date of the single is decisive. Due to downloads and music streaming , since the 2000s more and more songs have made it into the charts that did not appear as single. If a song did not appear as a single, the release date of the sound carrier on which the piece was first found is decisive. The tables provide an overview of the chart successes (chart placement and chart weeks) as well as verifiable sales figures for Christmas discs in Germany. In addition, the dates of the first publication and the first chart entries are included. In addition to the albums, the information from the music labels and, for the songs, the information about the authors or originators (music / text) are included.
It should be noted that the "certified sales" are a minimum number of records sold. Since there are fixed lending limits for the awards, the actual sales of the respective sound carriers can be somewhat higher - i.e. between the awarded and the next awarding limit. Furthermore, until 1977 the music charts in Germany were initially determined monthly and later every six months; for better comparability, monthly chart editions with four and half-monthly chart editions with two weeks are included in the rating.

Music charts
Music charts have existed in Germany since the end of 1953 (single charts), when the jukebox came to (West) Germany from the United States . The magazine Der Automatenmarkt published a list of the most popular boxing hits every month . From July 1959 the magazine Musikmarkt appeared , which also contained a hit list. These charts, which also appear monthly, were more sophisticated, as they not only consulted the success of the jukebox, but also sheet music sales , the use of airplay and sound carriers, i.e. record sales at the time . The music market hit parade quickly overtook the box charts and took on the role of the official German chart organ. After initially only chart lists for singles were published, the album charts were published in parallel from July 15, 1962. At the beginning of 1965 the hit parade appeared twice a month. In 1971 the music market switched to weekly publication. The chart determination was transferred to the company Media Control from September 1977 .
Since 2001, sales of various Internet retailers have been included in the calculation of the German music charts. From September 2004, downloads from various Internet platforms were also included in the rating of the single charts. Since July 13, 2007, the evaluations have been switched to so-called "value charts". For chart placement, the number of records sold is no longer decisive, as was previously the case, but the sales achieved by a product. In 2009 downloads were included in the album charts. In 2013 GfK Entertainment took over the charter position. After music streaming celebrated its breakthrough in the same year, it was also included in the calculation of the single charts in Germany with the first analysis in 2014. Since February 2016, streaming views have also been included in the album charts.
Gold and platinum awards
Gold and platinum awards are nowadays awarded in Germany by the Federal Association of the Music Industry (BVMI). It has officially presented awards for audio products since 1975 and for audio and video carriers since 1991. The record companies concerned must apply for the certifications; the awards are not automatically assigned. Already before 1975 record awards were made by the respective sound carrier manufacturer, but not according to standardized and officially tested criteria. According to a guideline dated January 1, 1976, the number of rated sales is determined according to the units sold to GEMA or another collecting society of the authors as domestic sales. In addition, music streaming is also included in the sales statistics for music albums and singles . However, only “premium streams” of the corresponding online music services with a certain “conversion factor” are included. In the case of singles, premium streams are taken into account regardless of the release date; in the case of music albums, these are only taken into account for sound carriers that were first released after January 1, 2016. The problem with the BVMI awards is that recordings, their "high phase" before 1975, are not shown with sales figures.
Since 1999, the award limits have been adjusted at irregular intervals. Between 1999 and 2002, due to the decreasing sales figures, the lending limits were gradually lowered. In the course of increasing single sales through downloads and the integration of premium music streaming, the lending limits were raised for the first time in 2014.

List of the most commercially successful albums
The first Christmas album that was able to place in the German album charts comes from the Austrian pop singer Freddy Quinn . His album Christmas on the High Seas first hit the German album charts on January 15, 1964. Since the introduction of the German album charts, six albums have made it to the top of the charts. Freddy Quinn succeeded for the first time with his Christmas on the high seas in 1964. 16 years later, Christmas with Andrea Jürgens by Andrea Jürgens made it to the top of the German album charts in 1980 as the second Christmas album. After that, it took 32 years until 2011 Michael Bublé and his Album Christmas was able to place another Christmas album at the top of the chart. In 2015, Helene Fischer's Christmas made it to position one as the fourth album. As the fifth album, Sing mein Song - The Christmas Concert Vol. 4 by Sing mein Song Allstars of the fourth season reached the top of the chart. As the last Christmas album to date, The Christmas Present by Robbie Williams reached the top position. In addition to the five number one successes, a total of 23 Christmas albums made it into the top 10 . Only three albums from the TV format Sing mein Song reached the top 10.
So far, six albums have demonstrably reached the status of a million seller. The first album to exceed the million mark was Christmas with Heintje by the Dutch child star Heintje in 1968. 13 years later - in 1981 - Christmas with Andrea Jürgens by Andrea Jürgens crossed the million mark as the second album. With 1.25 million units sold, the album also ranks second among the best-selling Christmas albums in Germany. The best-selling Christmas album with 1.5 million units sold is the album Winterkinder ... in search of Christmas and is by Rolf Zuckowski . In third place is Christmas by Helene Fischer and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra . In addition, Roger Whittaker's Christmas with Roger Whittaker and Rolf Zuckowski's December dreams also exceeded the million mark . In addition to two million sellers, eight Christmas albums by Zuckowski made it into the German charts, and two other Christmas albums were also honored with gold and platinum awards. This makes Zuckowski the most successful artist in the album charts and, with over four million Christmas albums sold, the best-selling artist in terms of Christmas albums.

List of the most commercially successful songs
The first Christmas carol that made it into the German single charts comes from the collaboration of Gerhard Wendland , the Waldo Favre Choir and Werner Müller with the RIAS dance orchestra . Her German adoption of White Christmas - entitled White Christmas - was released as a single in 1954 and hit the German single charts for the first time on December 1, 1955. Due to the fact that the single charts in Germany only existed since 1953, songs could not be placed in the charts in the period before. With the beginning of the download and streaming era, old Christmas classics such as Bing Crosby's White Christmas (1942) made it into the German single charts for the first time 65 years after its appearance, making it the oldest Christmas song that has made it into the German single charts. In the 2010s the number of Christmas carols increased steadily year after year. The climax came in 2018, thanks to downloads and music streaming , 54 Christmas carols were simultaneously in the top 100 singles. This clearly exceeded last year's record of 39 Christmas carols.
Since 1953, only four Christmas carols have made it to the top of the German charts. The first number-one hit could Boney M. with Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord land in the 1979th In 1984 the benefit project Band Aid made it with Do They Know It's Christmas? with the second Christmas single to the top of the chart. The third number one also comes from a Band Aid project. 30 years after the original, the German offshoot Band Aid 30 Germany succeeded with a German version of Do They Know It's Christmas? to the top of the German charts. 2019-25 years after its first appearance - managed All I Want for Christmas Is You by Mariah Carey for the first time to the chart top. In addition to the four number one successes, a total of 21 Christmas carols made it into the top 10 , just the composition for Do They Know It's Christmas? made it into the top 10 in five different versions. A total of six different versions of the piece made it into the top 100, only the compositions for Last Christmas made it into the German single charts with seven different versions. On November 30, 2018, the original for Last Christmas made it into the German single charts for the 130th time, setting a new all-time record. No other single has been in the charts longer than this. Before that, Paul and Fritz Kalkbrenner held this record with Sky and Sand (129 weeks). The singer Michael Bublé reached the German single charts with six Christmas carols, more than any other performer.
So far, only six singles have demonstrably been honored with gold and platinum awards. Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You was recognized for over 750,000 units sold, making it the biggest selling Christmas single. In second place is Wham! S Last Christmas , which was awarded for 500,000 units sold. The best-selling German-language single comes from Ella Endlich , her adoption of Kiss me, hold me, love me from the film Three Hazelnuts for Cinderella was awarded for 150,000 units sold.
