Pink pop
Pinkpop Festival or PINKPOP is an annual, originally at Whitsun , open-air music festival in the Netherlands . As the festival has taken place annually since 1970, it is the oldest continuously held music festival in Europe.
The festival area is located on a former trotting track in Landgraaf , a place bordering Kerkrade in the province of Limburg . Kerkrade itself is only a few kilometers northwest of Aachen . The festival lasts for three days and now offers space for almost 60,000 visitors (as of 2008).
The term "Pinkpop" is a combination of two words: The Dutch Pinksteren (in German: Pentecost) and the internationally used genre of music, Pop . Part of the income goes to the aid organization Amnesty International , which is allowed to draw attention to its work directly on and next to the stages.
The history
Pinkpop until 2005
After the Woodstock Festival held in the USA in 1969 , Jan Smeets from Limburg, who was still to be head of the organization in 2012, set about organizing an open-air concert in the Netherlands. On May 18, 1970, Whit Monday, the time had come: the first PinkPop Festival took place. For an admission price of 4.50 guilders you could listen to bands like Golden Earring or George Baker Selection . With 10,000 visitors, the festival was an instant success and the second PinkPop in 1971 also attracted 16,000 spectators to marvel at bands like Fleetwood Mac and Mungo Jerry . The concerts initially took place in the sports park in the Dutch city of Geleen, near Maastricht , and the festival was scheduled for Whit Monday of each year. By the early 1980s, the festival grew to up to 50,000 visitors per event, before it had to go through a dry spell in the mid-1980s, as 15,000 visitors turned up on Whit Monday in 1985. After that it went steeply uphill again and in 1993 the audience reached a record with over 60,000 spectators. In 1988 there was also a move (the festival took place in various locations over the years) to Landgraaf, as the organization bought the disused racetrack and from then on marketed it as a “megaland” for other events besides PinkPop. In 1995 the festival took place for the first time on Whitsunday and in 1996, with the addition of Saturday, it became a three-day open-air festival, whereby single tickets can be purchased for the day with the most visitors, Monday. The growth continued and from 1999 to 2002 the festival was completely or almost completely sold out. The year 2003, which was also well attended with around 50,000 people, was followed by the first massive drop in attendance to around 35,000 visitors in 2004.
Pinkpop 2005
In 2005 the main electro acts Chemical Brothers , The Prodigy and Faithless faced newcomers like Bloc Party , Kaiser Chiefs and "old hands" like Sick of It All or Cake . But this special program was not for everyone: The decline in visitors continued: the number of festival guests fell to around 20,000. The early date (May 14th to 16th) and the lack of other Whitsun festivals (the Dynamo Open Air did not take place, Rock am Ring was moved several weeks into June) were the main reasons for the lack of "big names" by the organization. called, which would probably have attracted more viewers. Thanks to long-term contracts with various sponsors, the festival was obviously able to cope with lean periods like those of the past two years.
Pinkpop 2006
As announced, the two big festivals Rock am Ring and PinkPop took place at the same time on the Whitsun weekend in 2006. With a total of 68,000 spectators, the organizer was also able to announce a sold-out festival at the end of the last day.
The best-known and publikumswirksamste bands can The Dresden Dolls , Nelly Furtado , Kaiser Chiefs , Placebo , Dredg , Danko Jones , The Bloodhound Gang , dEUS , tool , The Flaming Lips , Soulfly , Deftones , Nickelback , Morrissey , Keane , Franz Ferdinand and the Red hot chili peppers are called.
Pinkpop 2007
In 2007 the festival took place from May 26th to 28th. Wir sind Helden , Within Temptation , Marilyn Manson , Good Charlotte , Iggy & the Stooges , Snow Patrol , Muse , Wolfmother , Scissor Sisters , Arctic Monkeys , Linkin Park , Evanescence and Korn appeared on the three stages over three days .
Pinkpop 2008
For the first time in 2008 the festival did not take place at Whitsun, but from May 30th to June 1st. The actual Pentecost date in mid-May 2008 appeared too early, as apparently only a few American bands are ready to come to Europe for just one festival. Instead, the 2nd Pinkpop Classic took place on Whit Monday. With 180,000 visitors within three days, the Pinkpop Festival 2008 achieved a new record number of visitors. Especially the headliners Metallica , Foo Fighters and the reunited band Rage Against the Machine attracted many music fans to Landgraaf .
Pinkpop 2009
Pinkpop 2009 took place from May 30th to June 1st. Some of the 38 bands were Billy Talent , Amy Macdonald , Bruce Springsteen , Anouk , Katy Perry , Milow , Placebo , Snow Patrol , The Killers and The Kooks
Pinkpop 2010
The Pinkpop Festival 2010 took place from May 28th to May 30th. The headliners were Rammstein , The Prodigy and Green Day . Furthermore, Danko Jones , Biffy Clyro , Mika , The Temper Trap , Kasabian , Sungrazer, Paolo Nutini , Gossip , Editors , Mando Diao , John Mayer , Skunk Anansie , Pixies , Wolfmother , Gogol Bordello and Pink performed .
Pinkpop 2011
In 2011, the Pinkpop Festival took place as usual on the weekend of Pentecost (June 11th to 13th). The headliners this year were: Coldplay , Foo Fighters and Kings of Leon . Pinkpop 2018
Pinkpop 2018 took place from 15.-17. June (and therefore not at Pentecost for the sixth time).
A fatal traffic accident involving festival-goers occurred in the early morning of June 18th. After the festival, around 4 a.m., a group of people sat on the street near campsite B, which was not closed to vehicle traffic (this was apparently unknown to them). The information so far known indicates that a white Opel van driving on this road could not avoid the group. One person from the group was killed and three others seriously injured. The driver reported to the police in Amsterdam several hours later .
During the Foo Fighters' performance on June 16, the decay of a large meteor was observed in the sky directly behind the main stage and recorded on video. The fireball and its decay have also been observed in other locations in the Benelux , Germany and France . An analysis of over 200 eyewitness accounts revealed that the disintegration occurred at 11:11 p.m. local time near the Belgian city of Liège .

The Pinkpop 2020 should take place from 19.-21. June take place. However, due to the corona pandemic , it had to be canceled.
Trivia
- The long history of the festival was celebrated in August 2007 with the first ever Pinkpop Classic concert. With bands like Status Quo or Marillion , artists performed here who had already played on Pinkpop in the 1970s or 1980s.
- The organizer responsible since the first edition of the festival, Jan Smeets, doesn’t miss the opportunity to announce individual bands himself at “his” festival . Basically, at the end of each day of the festival, he takes the stage again to thank the visitors for coming.
- Since the event site borders on a residential area , the organization must adhere to binding times in the evening, only on the campsites can partying into the night. After complaints from residents, it was only possible to play on the stages on the days of the event until 10:30 p.m. The final fireworks display was therefore also canceled.
