The Renault 18 - R18 for short - is a passenger car model from the manufacturer Renault , which was manufactured from spring 1978 to early 1986. It took the place of being introduced in the fall of 1969 Renault 12 and compares with a front engine longitudinally in front of the double wishbone front axle, rear wheel drive and the three trailing arms out rigid rear axle his predecessor.

history

When the sedan went on sale in September 1978, two equipment variants were available, both with two different petrol engines with either 1.4 l and 47 kW (64 hp) or 1.6 l with 58 kW (79 hp), from 1982 54 kW ( 73 hp).

The five-door station wagon, initially called “Variable” in Germany and “Break” in France, came onto the market in April 1979 after it was presented at the Geneva Motor Show . The R18 was manufactured in the plant in Flins, west of Paris.

The TL and TS versions had the same (basic) equipment and different engines. The GTL and GTS versions contained equipment features such as central door locks, power windows and headlight washers, and here too L or S provided information about the built-in engine model.

In the fall of 1980 new engines were introduced; a diesel engine with 2.1 l displacement and 49 kW (67 hp) and a 1.6 l gasoline engine with turbocharger that initially produced 80 kW (109 hp) and from autumn 1982 then 92 kW (125 hp).

In spring 1982 the Break or Variable was renamed Combi .

From autumn 1983 the Renault 18 Combi 4 × 4 was available with an all-wheel drive developed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch . At the same time, the entire series received wider bumpers.

The next modifications followed in May 1984 were a changed radiator grille, a revised dashboard and the renewed center console from the Fuego sports coupé .

In the autumn of 1984, the engine range was supplemented by an additional diesel variant (R18 TD ) with the same displacement but with a turbocharger, which developed 65 kW (88 hp). From the summer of 1985 there was the R18 TX Combi with a 2-liter gasoline engine, catalytic converter and 77 kW (105 PS).

In March 1986 the successor Renault 21 was presented. In France, production continued until the end of 1989. The last R18 rolled off the assembly line in Argentina in 1994 .

The R18 had a very soft and comfortably tuned chassis. The manufacturing quality often did not meet the requirements of the customers, which has been improved in younger models through improved quality control.

In America, the vehicle was offered as the Renault 18i or Renault Sportwagon via the cooperation partner AMC, with only moderate success. In early 1987, the American model was replaced by the Eagle Medallion , an American version of the R21 .

Turbo engine

Before the appearance of a turbo engine in the R18, Renault had introduced supercharging into series production in the R5 . The engine block and cylinder head of the R18 Turbo are made of light metal. Basis is introduced in R16 motor type Cléon-aluminum , or type A . The ignition was electronically controlled with a knock sensor . Renault opted for a Garrett turbocharger with a maximum of 0.6 bar overpressure and an intercooler with a displacement of 1565 cm³ and a compression of 8.6: 1, the mixture preparation being carried out by a pressure carburetor, which was arranged behind the intercooler. For this reason, measures were necessary on the one hand for higher fuel pressure and also for acceleration enrichment, for the latter there were two systems, one responding from 0.18 bar overpressure and the second at 0.45 bar overpressure. In the Renault 5 Alpine Turbo , the carburetor was placed in front of the turbocharger for cost reasons. If knocking occurs, the knock sensor adjusts the ignition by four degrees crankshaft angle towards retarded for 15 seconds. If the boost pressure exceeds 0.78 bar overpressure, the ignition is briefly interrupted.

This supercharging enables the engine to achieve a maximum torque of 181 Nm at a speed of 2250 rpm, which is comparatively low for a gasoline engine. Up to 4000 rpm it also drops only a little below 180 Nm. The output in the 1st version of the turbo engine was 80 kW (109 PS) at 5000 rpm. The acceleration from 0-100 km / h is 10.0s, 400 m with a standing start are covered in 17.4 s and the top speed is 185 km / h. After a facelift, this turbo engine developed 92 kW (125 PS).

Special models

  • 18 American (1983), two-tone paintwork in silver / black, rear spoiler, chrome strips, light alloy wheels with size 155 SR 13 tires and sports steering wheel. The French comedian and musician Cartman released a song called La Renault 18 American on his album Look D'Enfer in 2014 under the pseudonym Sébastien Patoche .

Miscellaneous

Statistics from the UK auto magazine Auto Express in August 2006 showed that of the total of 131,241 R18s registered in the UK, only 317 are now roadworthy.
