The Renault Messenger, originally launched as the Renault B-Series / Renault Gamme B, was a light truck produced by Renault Trucks . It replaced the Renault Super Goélette SG2 . The chassis and components were built on a solid ladder frame on which the cabin from the Renault Master I was built. It was basically rear-wheel drive , but all-wheel drive was also available as an option. It was built by Renault Véhicules Industriels from October 1982 in Batilly in Lorraine .
It was available as a single or double cabin, flatbed truck , panel van with 12 m³ loading volume and a chassis for superstructures. The maximum total weight was between 3.5 tons and 6.5 tons, depending on the version. A SOFIM 2.5l diesel engine with 53 kW (72 PS) (the 8140 ) and a 2.0l petrol engine with 59 kW (80 PS) were used.
At the back and front it had a rigid front axle with leaf springs and hydraulic shock absorbers, as well as internally ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear.
In the 5-speed manual transmission of the model with a gasoline engine, 5th gear was designed as a direct drive. This specification enabled a non-slip drive when starting off in hardy conditions and off-road.
Changes by model year
- In 1986 the gasoline engine was also available with a turbocharger , which increased the output to 68 kW (92 hp).
- From the 1990 model year, there was a civil version of the Messenger 4 × 4 box van specially designed for private use, with preparation for mobile home expansion or with mobile homes developed by suppliers at the dealer.
- In 1990, the exhaust gas-charged gasoline engine variant increased to 78 kW (106 hp), while the weakest gasoline engine sank to 56 kW (76 hp) because of the catalytic converter .
- In 1992 the turbo engine was also given a charge air cooler and now developed 85 kW (116 hp).
- In 1993 the B-series received a new grille and became the Renault Messenger.
- In 1996, thanks to a revision, the performance of the turbo gasoline engine increased to 90 kW (122 hp).
