Marek Mintál [ ˈmarɛk ˈmintaːɫ ] (born September 2, 1977 in Žilina , Czechoslovakia ) is a former Slovak professional soccer player - and now an amateur player and coach . Until 2003 he was twice Slovak champion and two-time top scorer with the MŠK Žilina . After moving to 1. FC Nürnberg , he was two-time top scorer in the second Bundesliga, top scorer in the first Bundesliga, DFB Cup winner and played in the European Cup. Most recently he was active for Hansa Rostock and the second team of 1. FC Nürnberg. In Slovakia he was named footballer of the year twice and footballer of the decade once, and the Nuremberg fans voted him midfield legend of the century .

He is currently the head coach of the second team at 1. FC Nürnberg .

Career as a player

Mintál was an active midfielder who was also often used as a striker. This double talent was probably the cause of his high goal danger, which he achieved mainly as a hanging point. His career was marked by several titles won, numerous injuries and great popularity with the respective supporters.

MSK Žilina (1996-2003)

Mintál began his sporting career with the Slovak first division club MŠK Žilina . The then 19-year-old had his first game on matchday 20 of the 1996/97 season. He was substituted on in the 65th minute and scored after 15 minutes to make it 2: 3. In the current season he was a regular player, which he stayed in the next season, in which he scored two goals. Another year later he was already the seventh best goalscorer in the league, after which he reached fourth place. In 2000 he was in the Slovak Olympic squad at the Sydney Summer Games . His only mission was against Japan on September 17th. Slovakia was eliminated from the group last in the preliminary round . In the 2001/02 season he was finally top scorer and Slovak champion , which succeeded again the following year. Mintál's shirt number at Žilina was 9.

On February 6, 2002 Mintál made his debut in the Slovak national team .

1. FC Nuremberg

In the summer of 2003 he moved for a transfer fee of an estimated 100,000 euros to the then second division club 1. FC Nürnberg , where he got the shirt number 11 and made his debut on August 4, 2003 under coach Wolfgang Wolf in the game against Karlsruher SC .

Second Bundesliga (2003-2004)

Mintál played his first competitive game on the first day of the 2003/04 season against Karlsruher SC, who were defeated. On the 4th matchday he scored his first goal in a draw against Energie Cottbus. With a total of 18 goals, he was the top scorer straight away and thus contributed significantly to the promotion of 1. FC Nürnberg to the First Bundesliga . From then on, Mintál was also a regular in the Slovak national team.

Record top scorer and first injury (2004-2005)

In the 2004/05 season Mintál was used in all 34 games. He made his Bundesliga debut on August 7, 2004 with a win at 1. FC Kaiserslautern. He scored his first goals on matchday three in the form of a three-pack, but the opponent Hamburger SV won. Mintál scored another three-pack on matchday 12 when they defeated Wolfsburg. In the end, the Slovak was the top scorer with 24 goals and thus played a decisive role in the non-relegation of 1. FC Nürnberg. So he achieved the unique feat of being the most successful goalscorer in four consecutive seasons in three different leagues (in Slovakia, in the second and finally in the first division). It was also only the second time that a player was top scorer first in the second and the following year in the first Bundesliga (after Rudi Völler in 1982) and the first time ever that this succeeded with the same club. Mintál is also 1. FC Nürnberg's only top scorer in both the first and second Bundesliga.

How valuable Mintál was for 1. FC Nürnberg was shown by the preliminary round of the 2005/06 season , in which he had to pause from the third day of the game due to a metatarsal fracture, which massively impaired the club's offensive game, also because his congenial cooperation with Mintál's failure Striker Róbert Vittek was absent. In time to prepare for the second half of the season, Mintál cured his injury and was therefore considered to be an important bearer of hope in the fight to stay up.

The Second Injury (2006)

Marek Mintál 2006

The comeback was short-lived, however, as Mintál had to leave the field after a few minutes at the start of the second half of the 2005/06 season in the game against Hamburger SV . Mintál had suffered another metatarsal fracture and was out again for the rest of the season. During the entire season he had only made four appearances and one goal. On July 4, 2006, his contract, dated until summer 2008, was extended to the end of the 2009/10 season. Sports director Martin Bader said: "Marek is an important element in our future."

To his return to the field he came in the pre-season on August 1, 2006 in a test match against SpVgg Unterhaching , when he came on in the sixtieth minute, and on August 5 in a friendly game of 1. FCN against PSV Eindhoven . In the second half of the second half, Marek Mintál came on and was able to continue playing until the end of the game without further injury. Nuremberg won 3-0.

On August 18, 2006, the 2nd match day of the 2006/07 Bundesliga season and the first home game of 1. FC Nuremberg against Borussia Mönchengladbach , he played a 28-minute mission. The “Phantom”, which was loudly welcomed by the fans, helped the club (which won 1-0) to their best start to the season (two wins) since 1968. After 385 days, he also scored on September 2 in the game of Slovakia against Cyprus (6-1) back in goal, in addition to two of his own goals, three more goals were scored after his pass.

Another failure (2006-2007)

After an international match against Malta, Mintál complained again of pain in his right foot. Investigations in November 2006 showed that Mintál's metal splint used to stabilize the foot was not properly seated and that the fracture had therefore not healed properly. The splint had to be removed and for the third time in a row the Slovak had to take a long forced break to heal the metatarsal fracture. From the 13th game day he was out and returned on April 17, 2007, five game days before the end of the season. He sat on the bench in the DFB Cup semi-final home game against Eintracht Frankfurt and was substituted on in the final minutes. From then on it went very quickly. On May 5th he returned to the Bundesliga, played 90 minutes in the last two games of the season and scored a Bundesliga goal again on May 19th after 21 months.

DFB Cup and international missions (2007-2008)

Mintál converts a penalty, home game against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on September 26, 2007

In the final of the DFB Cup against VfB Stuttgart (final score: 3: 2) on May 26, 2007, he became a tragic figure after he was injured shortly after he scored a 1-1 equalizer due to a serious foul by Fernando Meira had to be replaced. After an examination in a private practice, he was present again for the award ceremony. The diagnoses revealed an internal ligament tear and a meniscus contusion . However, the injuries healed faster than expected. Mintál was back at the start of the 2007/08 season on June 26th.

Mintál won a poll of fans who they consider to be the new season's internal top scorer. With five goals, all of which he had scored in home games, he was the third best scorer in the end; But his most spectacular appearance was in the UEFA Cup , when he turned the home game against AZ Alkmaar with a double strike in the final minutes and thus laid the foundation for later surviving the group stage, which Nuremberg finally won with a 3-1 win AE Larisa succeeded, which Mintál also had a part in with his third UEFA Cup goal. On February 2, 2008, he played his hundredth league game for Nuremberg, which was a 2-0 away defeat against Karlsruher SC and at the end of the season Nuremberg was relegated to the second division.

Second division again (2008–2009)

Despite the unsuccessful relegation, Mintál signed a new contract until 2011, which should be extended with a certain number of missions. At that time, both Mintál and the club had expressed the desire to continue employing the player after his active career, for example as a scout or in the youth field. On September 14, 2008 he scored his fiftieth league goal for Nuremberg against SV Wehen Wiesbaden in his 117th game. On November 2, he was sent off (red) for the first time since his time in Nuremberg when he played against FC Sankt Pauli. For this he was banned for three games by the DFB sports court “for assault against the opponent after an act contrary to sport” previously committed against him. After the suspension, Mintál sat one more game on the bench, as coach Michael Oenning had to rely on young players and had thus achieved the best performance of the season. On December 8th, Mintál returned to the starting line-up due to an injury and scored twice. On March 9, he was initially only on the bench in the game at MSV Duisburg due to poor form, but was substituted on in the 87th minute, which meant his 150th competitive game for Nuremberg. At the next home game against Rot Weiss Ahlen, he played full time again and scored three goals. It was his third three-pack for Nuremberg, but he never managed a flawless hat trick . The game was the beginning of a run for Mintál, as he scored four more goals in the following four games, which he moved up to a shared third place in the goalscoring standings of the 2008/09 season . He experienced a setback on matchday 29 when he received another red card in the game against FSV Frankfurt. According to the assistant referee, Mintál, who insisted on a corner kick in the 93rd minute , was said to have shown the bird and was eventually suspended for two games "for insulting the assistant referee in a lighter case". The Slovak later stated that he only wanted to imply that an opponent had touched the ball with his head. After this suspension, Mintál moved back into the starting line-up against VfL Osnabrück on matchday 32 and made a brace. This moved him to number one on the scorers list. With his 16th goal on the last match day against TSV 1860 Munich, Mintál defended this position and was once again top scorer in the second division.

At the end of the season, Mintál announced his retirement from the Slovak national team at the age of 31. He finally scored in the 37th minute in the relegation second leg against Energie Cottbus to make it 2-0 and thus made the recovery of 1. FC Nürnberg perfect. After the season, the kicker sports magazine declared him the best attacking midfielder of the second half of the season.

After the second ascent (2009-2011)

Marek Mintál 2010

On August 1, 2009, Mintál met in the first round of the 2009/10 DFB Cup in a 3-0 win over Dynamo Dresden. In the first Bundesliga game of the 2009/10 season he scored the 1: 2 final against FC Schalke 04, which was his only goal in his twelve appearances in the first half of the season. He also had strong competition from İlkay Gündoğan . After the winter break, the new coach Dieter Hecking switched to a double-six, which Mintál initially lost his regular place and only came on for a short substitution on matchday 18. On matchday 20 he was back in the starting line-up and was able to convince, which means he was on the field from the start in the next two games. In the rest of the season he only made five substitutions and was only allowed to play through again on the last match day. So he came to 1346 minutes in 22nd missions. He was substituted on in the two successful relegation games.

Because of the few appearances, there was speculation about an exit after the season. However, Mintál stated in a newspaper interview that he wanted to stay in Nuremberg. At the end of May he was voted Footballer of the Decade in Slovakia . According to a newspaper report from July 2010, an exit was no longer ruled out. During the break of the season, he was voted midfield legend of the century by club fans in an internet vote with 46% of the votes . So he also belongs to the century (+10) eleven .

In the first half of the 2010/11 season , Mintál remained a substitute: He was only substituted six times and only had 47 minutes of playing time. His contract was not extended during the winter break; instead he was offered a follow-up contract. However, Mintál declared that he did not want to end his active career and therefore announced his departure. A move to the American club Philadelphia Union seemed imminent, but Mintál canceled it after visiting the club on site. So he stayed in Nuremberg for the second half of the season and was used again in the cup quarter-finals against FC Schalke 04 for the first time in the new year. In the second half of the season Mintál was substituted eleven times and was able to increase his total playing time to 184 minutes. He was without a goal, but came up with two assists. On May 5, 2011, Mintál expressed an interest in returning to MŠK Žilina. The last home game of the season took place on May 7th. Mintál came on as a substitute in the 63rd minute and took an emotional farewell to the fans after the final whistle. He said “I would like to thank the fans for the past eight years. You are the best fans in the world. You always gave me strength, no matter whether it went well or bad, you always stood behind me. I will never forget that. I love you! ”On May 14, Mintál made his last appearance for Nuremberg at the last game of the season in Hanover, when he came on in the 56th minute.

Hansa Rostock (2011-2012)

For the 2011/12 season Mintál moved to the then second division club FC Hansa Rostock . He signed a two-year contract with the Hanseatic League until June 30, 2013 and was given the number 11 on his back. After only two league games and one cup appearance, he suffered a serious injury there. On October 28th he was substituted for the first time against Energie Cottbus; on November 19th he scored his first goal for Rostock in a 3-1 draw against FC St. Pauli . It was his first pro in two years and 103 days. On December 18, the last matchday before the winter break, he scored again in a 2-2 draw against Dynamo Dresden. On the following day he was a tragic figure in a 2-1 defeat in Bochum, as he missed a penalty. The restitution followed just a week later, when he played a decisive role in the 4-2 win over MSV Duisburg with a double pack. In the 4: 5 against 1. FC Union Berlin on matchday 33, Mintál met again, but could not prevent the defeat, whereby Rostock was determined to be relegated to the third division . On May 6, 2012, the last matchday of the season, Mintál met in the 90th minute to make the 2-2 final against SpVgg Greuther Fürth , who nevertheless ended the season in first place.

Return to Nuremberg

In an interview with Nürnberger Nachrichten , Mintál said that he wanted to return to 1. FC Nürnberg and work there in the youth sector. On May 10, 2012, his return to 1. FC Nürnberg was officially announced, and for the 2012/13 season he was accepted as a leading player in the regional league's youth team.

Farewell game with the professional team (2012)

On July 21, 2012, 1. FC Nürnberg honored Mintál with a farewell game when he left professional football . After Andreas Köpke, he was the second ex-professional in the club's history to receive such a game. Opponent was the German champions and cup winners from 2012 Borussia Dortmund . Several interviews with Mintál were shown before kick-off, and special goals from his career were shown during the game. Nürnberg won 4-2, with Mintál scoring his 131st goal in the first team (including friendly matches) from a penalty. In Dortmund, however, some well-known players were missing, such as the German national team. The game was broadcast live on Bavarian television , and Sebastian Kehl's 0: 1 was voted goal of the month . Mintál had also invited numerous companions to the final game, but not all of them could appear. Were present as Michael A. Roth , Hans Meyer , Michael Oenning , Martin Driller , Tomáš Galásek and Dominic Maroh . Despite the farewell game, it was not entirely ruled out that Mintál could help out in the first team again.

1. FC Nürnberg II (2012-2013)

On July 25, Mintál came to his first appearance in the fourth -rate regional soccer league Bayern 2012/13 . Nürnberg played 2-2 against FC Memmingen. It was the second day of play because the Slovak was released due to his farewell game on the first day of play. On the third match day, Mintál scored two goals and helped his club to a 4-2 win against FC Ingolstadt 04 II in their own stadium in front of 349 spectators. In the further course of the season Mintál played almost continuously. On the 25th matchday, after a 2-0 defeat against TSV Buchbach , the referee was insulted, for which the Slovak was punished with a red card. Mintál scored a brace on matchday 37, turning a 2-0 deficit against SV Heimstetten into a draw in the last few minutes.

On May 25, the last day of the regional league, Mintál had his last soccer game as an active player. The opponent was TSV 1860 Munich II, the champions of the league. In the 80th minute, the Slovak was replaced in front of 1,395 spectators and even said goodbye to the guest fans with chants. In total, he had come up with eleven goals in thirty appearances during the season.

Coaching career

Although Mintál was still active in the second team of 1. FC Nürnberg, he took up the position of team manager of the Slovak U-21 national team in early November 2012 .

After the 2012/13 season, Mintál should work in the coaching staff of the U-23 team. However, Mintál became assistant coach to Michael Wiesinger and Armin Reutershahn for the Bundesliga team for the 2013/14 season . Even after the head coach change to Gertjan Verbeek , Mintál kept his position.

In October 2014 he switched to the coaching staff of the second team for a while in order to have more time for his coaching education. After successfully completing his A-coaching license, he returned to the first team as an offensive coach for the 2015/16 season.

For the 2017/18 season, Mintál was the head coach of the U16s and for the 2018/19 season he was the head coach of the U17s, who play in the B-Junior Bundesliga .

On February 12, 2019, Mintál temporarily became the assistant coach of interim coach Boris Schommers , who took over the Bundesliga team from Michael Köllner after the 21st matchday on the last place in the table . Under Schommers and Mintál, the team got 7 points up to the 33rd matchday, which means they were relegated one matchday before the end of the season.

For the 2019–21 season , Mintál took over the second team (U21) of 1. FC Nürnberg, which plays in the fourth-class Bavarian regional league , as head coach. On November 6, 2019, he took over after the exemption of Damir Canadi the second division team that was on the 11th place after the 12th matchday 14 points, as interim coach. He looked after the team in their 5-1 home defeat against Arminia Bielefeld and returned to the U21 after Jens Keller was signed . Keller was released after matchday 34, after the team had finished 16th. For the relegation matches against FC Ingolstadt 04 has been NLZ -directors Michael Wiesinger as interim coach, assisted the Mintál. After a 2-0 win in the first leg, FCN was 3-0 back in the second leg until stoppage time, before Fabian Schleusener scored the goal to keep the league in the 96th minute of the game.

Personal and popularity

Mintál and his wife Katka have three children. After a goal he usually takes a characteristic leap for joy. His footballing role model is the Italian Roberto Baggio .

In Nuremberg, Mintál already enjoyed great sympathy as an active player. This was triggered by his scoring 2004/05 and his humble, down-to-earth manner. Many club fans took part in his numerous injuries and setbacks. Marek Mintál himself thanked very often and in a very emotional way for the great support during this time; For example, he addressed the fans in a speech in the last home game of the first half of the 2007/08 season, in which he thanked the fans for their support in the European Cup match against AZ Alkmaar, which he had turned with two goals within two minutes.
