Participant and boycott

In numerous previous Olympic Games, too, there had repeatedly been nations that wanted to set an example by refusing to participate. At these games in Moscow, however, the boycott took on an extent never seen before. Detailed information can be found in the general section on the 1980 Olympic Games .

As in many other sports, the boycott meant that numerous favorites and world-class athletes were not at the start. The athletes from the United States were particularly absent, of course. There were also no athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany in Moscow. The fact that some nations are not under their national flag but under a neutral IOC flag is also noticeable in the results overviews. This seems a bit unusual for these countries, but was only the case for these 1980 games.

Stadion

The central Lenin Stadium was built in 1956 and was used for a wide variety of sports such as football, athletics, ice hockey and the like. a. The sports facility was rebuilt and modernized for the 1980s games in order to meet the growing demands. As is now customary, eight lanes were available so that eight participants could take part in the finals. This was also practiced in the throwing disciplines as well as in the long jump and triple jump for the last three finals.

measuring technology

The use of electronic measuring instruments had meanwhile become standard, both for the times of the runners and the distances achieved in jumping and throwing. The running and walking times were officially given in hundredths of a second, except for routes of more than ten kilometers. In the discus , hammer and javelin throw , the distance achieved was rounded to a fifth of a centimeter as before. In the record and best lists, the restriction to purely electronically determined values, which were given with two decimal places, prevailed. That had a very positive effect on a certain mess in the sprint courses .

Competitions

There were two changes to the competition offer: the 50 km walk , which was canceled at the 1976 Olympic Games , was reinstated in the program. As in 1948, there were two walking distances here in Moscow , which were carried out on the street as usual. However, walking was still reserved for men only. The second change concerned the women's pentathlon . There, the 200-meter run was replaced by the 800-meter run in order to emphasize the versatility of this all-around event even more.

In the women's disciplines, there were numerous other additions for the future. Her longest running competition was still the 1,500 meter run . That should change from 1984 . From then on, additional longer distances were gradually added to the Olympic program and also in the jumps, throws, in walking and in all-around competitions, there should be a gradual adjustment to the competition catalog for men.

Sporting successes

The level of performance at these Olympic Games was significantly impaired by the boycott-related absence of numerous top athletes. Nevertheless, six world records were set in six disciplines . The Olympic record was improved twelve times in a further twelve disciplines .

The USA , the most successful nation in all games with the exception of 1972 and 1976, was not there. The host Soviet Union presented itself as the most successful country with fifteen Olympic athletics victories. The GDR was able to record eleven Olympic victories and thus took second place in this category. All other nations followed far behind. Great Britain won four gold medals, Italy three and the athletes from Poland and Ethiopia each had two Olympic champions. For all other nations there was at most one gold medal in athletics.

Three athletes won two gold medals in athletics at these games:

There was a gold and a silver medal for the following five athletes:

Three other athletes won a gold and a bronze medal each:

In addition, other services deserve special mention:

Scoring was based on a point table modified in 1977. For a better classification of the performance, in addition to the official points according to the rating table from 1977, the number of points converted according to the current rating system from 1985 is also given. According to this table that is valid today, there would have been no changes to the top eight. But these comparisons are of course only indicative, because the different standards of the time must apply as a basis.
