List of Spanish exonyms for German toponyms
In this list , the Spanish equivalents ( exonyms ) are given for German toponyms (ie names of cities, landscapes, rivers, mountains etc. in German-speaking countries) .
Hints:
- Names of regions that begin with upper , lower or middle are translated as Alto / Alta , Bajo / Baja (each in front) and Central (after) and are not listed individually. (Example: Alto Palatinado , Baja Lusacia , Franconia Central )
- All place names in -burg become -burgo in Spanish (unless they have a completely separate exonym, like Regensburg). In doing so, they lose any diaeresis that may be present , which marks an umlaut ( Luneburgo , Wurzburgo ). Often further adjustments are necessary (e.g. Charlottemburgo for Charlottenburg ), cf. also Brande (m) burgo .
- Eszett ( ß ) is regularly played with double S ( ss ).
- The specific article is indicated where necessary. The use of the article is often only correct in one of the two languages ( Renania - the Rhineland ).
- To make the list even more practical, the Spanish exonyms are also recorded for some foreign toponyms from neighboring geographical areas, for which there are very common German exonyms. This applies, for example, to places in French Switzerland (e.g. Geneva ), in the Benelux (e.g. Liège ) or in Poland (e.g. Wroclaw ), although as a rule they do not belong to the German-speaking area.
The most important European capitals (*), whose German names differ from the corresponding Spanish ones, are also included. - Individual Spanish exonyms are mainly known in the historical context and are only rarely used today (e.g. Tratado de Muñiste - the Peace of Münster (1648), but the city is now mostly referred to in Spanish as Münster or Munster ). Such exonyms are marked with (+).
- Names for places or landscape features not located in Germany or Austria are provided with the corresponding country codes .
