The Safrane came onto the domestic market in June 1992 as a replacement for the R25 that had been in production for eight years. In Germany it was delivered from January 1993.
Like its predecessor, the Safrane has a hatchback with a large tailgate.
Most of the vehicles were very well equipped (especially the Baccarat version). Similar to other French models in the upper middle class, the Safrane did not have a major breakthrough. In the home country of France, other vehicles were preferred and in the other markets (especially Germany) local vehicles of the upper middle class were preferred.
The large trunk opening offered some advantages when loading, but did not meet the taste of customers except in England and France.
The Safrane was available with different engines. There was a 2.2-liter gasoline engine with four cylinders and eight valves with 79 kW (107 hp), which was also available with three valves per cylinder and 101 kW (137 hp). There was also the V6 engine (known as the "Europe V6" or PRV engine ) with 123 kW (167 hp) output, which came from a joint development by Renault , PSA and Volvo . As diesel engines , there were initially a 2.5 liter, 83 kW (113 hp) turbo diesel or a 2.1 liter, 65 kW (88 hp) engine, but were later removed or replaced.
A small number of the Safrane Biturbo , which had been revised by Opel house tuner Irmscher (body parts, interior fittings and brakes) and BMW tuner Hartge (turbos), were also temporarily available from Renault dealers. Its six-cylinder engine, charged by two turbochargers , developed 193 kW (262 hp) and had corresponding performance (250 km / h top) with, however, significantly higher consumption. The vehicle was produced in small series of 640 pieces at Irmscher in Remshalden near Stuttgart.

In July 1996 there was a facelift for the 1997 model year (called Phase II ). From then on, Renault built in more modern engines: a 2.0-liter 16V four-cylinder with 100 kW (136 hp), a 2.5-liter 20V five-cylinder Volvo engine with 121 kW (165 hp) 2.2 l 12V four-cylinder turbodiesel with 83 kW (113 hp) and from the beginning of 1999 the most powerful engine was a new 3.0 l 24V six-cylinder with 140 kW (190 hp). The “all-wheel drive” option was eliminated and an automatic transmission was now standard equipment on the V6 models.
In December 2000, the production of the Safrane was stopped because of ever decreasing sales figures. His successor was the Vel Satis, published in spring 2002.

Furnishing
The Safrane was available as equipment lines from April 1992 to June 1996 as RN, RT and RXE, with RN being the basic equipment and RXE being the top equipment.
From the revision in July 1996, the equipment was based more on the engine. The 2.0-16V, 2.5-20V, 3.0-V6-24V (called Initiale Paris ) and 2.2-dT formed the equipment lines. In addition, there were numerous special models such as Elysée , Baccara and Edition for each phase .
An anti-lock braking system (ABS) was standard on the Safrane from the start of sales . From 1994 there were airbags for all models. From the beginning, airbags were only available on the V6 models of the RT and RXE lines.
Safrane II
The second generation of the Safrane was introduced to the Mexican market in 2008. Technically, the model is closely related to the South Korean Samsung SM5 . Parts of the Safrane's body are identical to those of the Japanese Nissan Teana J31 .
