Thomas Mario "Tommy" Haas (born April 3, 1978 in Hamburg ) is a former German tennis player and current tennis official who is also a US citizen.

Childhood and youth

Thomas Haas was born in Hamburg in 1978 as the son of the former Vice European Champion in Judo , Peter Haas, who came from Graz . His mother is German. He started playing tennis at the age of four. When he was 13, he went to Nick Bollettieri's tennis academy in Bradenton , Florida . The training in Florida, where he also has his main residence, was very successful. Among other things, Haas was Andre Agassi's playing partner for a long time , reached number 11 in the junior world rankings, won both double and single titles and was also among the best at the junior Grand Slam tournaments and the Orange Bowl. In 1996 he graduated from Bradenton High School .

His training (and that of his sister Sabine ) was financed by a pool of sponsors (TOSA Tennistalentförderung GmbH), which in return was guaranteed a share of 15% of the subsequent income (until 2004). When Tommy Haas stopped making payments in 1999, his sponsors went to court, and in 2003 ultimately enforced a payment of over € 500,000.

Tennis career

The first professional years (1997–1999)

He first drew attention to himself on the ATP World Tour in 1997 when he reached the semi-finals in Hamburg . After numerous injury problems in 1998, Haas made its preliminary breakthrough in 1999. In January he reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open after strong performances , where he was defeated by Evgeny Kafelnikow in three sets. In the spring, Haas won its first ATP tournament in Memphis . Until shortly before the end of the season, Haas had hopes of qualifying for the ATP World Cup in Hanover , but it did not succeed. For this he reached the final of the Grand Slam Cup in Munich, but lost there in four sets against Greg Rusedski .

Up and down: from the Olympics to the injury break (2000–2003)

In 2000 Haas won the silver medal in the tennis singles at the Olympic Games in Sydney after a five-set final match that was just lost against Yevgeny Kafelnikow.

2001 Haas had his best season to date. After winning the tournament in Stuttgart in October, he again had high hopes for reaching the ATP Masters. The decision was made at the Masters tournament in Paris. There Haas lost in the semifinals to Sébastien Grosjean , who also won the title. Grosjean was qualified for the Masters, Haas was only the substitute player.

In 2002, as in 1999, Haas reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open . After a 2-1 lead he was defeated by the Russian Marat Safin in five sets. In May 2002 Haas was in second place in the world rankings, his best placement. Difficult months followed, however. His parents were seriously injured in a serious motorcycle accident in the summer of 2002; his father was in a coma for weeks, but recovered.

In addition, Haas had to pause the entire 2003 season due to shoulder problems. During this time he had two shoulder operations.

Comeback and return to the top of the world (2004–2006)

Tommy Haas, 2006

After a 15-month injury break, Haas started his comeback on the ATP tour in early February 2004. The injury break of 467 days is the longest since there has been a comeback in men's tennis. On April 19, 2004, Haas was in Houston for the first time in 23 months in a final, which he won against Andy Roddick 6-3 and 6-4. In July 2004, Haas won his seventh individual title in Los Angeles. In the first purely German ATP final since 1994 (when Zoecke - Dreekmann played in Sun City) he defeated Nicolas Kiefer 7: 6 and 6: 4.

After a moderate season in 2005, in which he was at least world champion at the World Team Cup in Düsseldorf with the German team , Haas parted ways with his coach David Red Ayme at the end of the year . From then on he was looked after by Thomas Högstedt.

In the 2006 season, Haas was able to force the world number one and later tournament winner Roger Federer over the full distance of five sets at the Australian Open , to achieve three tournament successes. In early April he was in the semifinals in Houston. Due to a wrist injury, he missed his third tournament win of the season. At the US Open, Haas was able to decide in his favor two games in a row in the tie-break of the fifth set: in the third round against Robby Ginepri 7: 6 1 , 6: 4, 3: 6, 3: 6, 7: 6 1 and then in the round of 16 after a dramatic, competitive game against the Russian Marat Safin 4: 6, 6: 3, 2: 6, 6: 2, 7: 6 5 . In the quarter-finals he was eliminated against his compatriot Nikolai Dawydenko , against whom Haas lost his third five-set match within just four days with 6: 4, 7: 6, 3 , 3: 6, 4: 6, 4: 6.

He had a bad day in the Davis Cup relegation game against Thailand. He lost to the rather unknown Danai Udomchoke in five sets. He canceled his second single.

At the end of the 2006 season, he had the opportunity to qualify for the Masters Cup in Shanghai. Once again, Paris was the linchpin. He should have won the tournament, but after strong performances (he beat the then number nine in the world, James Blake ) in the semifinals against Dominik Hrbatý , because he had to give up because of gastrointestinal flu.

The year 2007

2007 started with a small disappointment for Haas. At the invitation tournament in Kooyong (Australia), a preparatory tournament for the Australian Open , he could not win any of his three games and was last. In addition, he remained without any set win. But with the start of the Australian Open, Haas got stronger and made it to the round of 16 without losing a set. There he defeated the Argentine David Nalbandian 3-1 in sets and remained unbeaten in the third comparison against the Argentine. In the quarter-finals he met his previous feared opponent Dawydenko, whom he defeated in five sets (6: 3, 2: 6, 1: 6, 6: 1, 7: 5). With this win, Haas moved into the semi-finals in Melbourne for the third time after 1999 and 2002, where he met Fernando González , against whom he then lost in three straight sets (1: 6, 3: 6, 1: 6). At the end of January 2007 he was back in the top ten of the world rankings after four and a half years.

In the first Daviscup round against Croatia he won his two singles against Mario Ančić and Ivan Ljubičić and led Germany to the quarterfinals against Belgium. On February 25, 2007 Haas achieved the eleventh tournament victory of his career. In Memphis he defeated Andy Roddick in the final after only 62 minutes with 6: 2 and 6: 3; this was the third time that he was allowed to enter the list of winners of the tournament after 1999 and 2006. In the Davis Cup quarter-finals against Belgium in April, he won his first individual against Kristof Viegen 6: 7, 7: 5, 6: 4, 6: 2.

At the ATP tournament in Rome , Haas suffered a shoulder injury in his first round game against Radek Štěpánek , which caused him to pause for several weeks and, among other things, to cancel the French Open . At Wimbledon, Haas reached the round of 16 for the first time, but had to cancel the match against world number one Roger Federer due to an injury.

At the US Open, Haas repeated his previous year's result. He failed in the quarter-finals as in 2006, but this time in three sets to Dawydenko.

The year 2008

The year 2008 was again marked by injuries for Haas, but he managed a few good matches against top players. At Wimbledon he was defeated by Andy Murray in four sets in the third round and he beat Richard Gasquet in a five-set match in round one of the US Open . In the second round, however, the surprising end came for Haas against the Luxembourg qualifier Gilles Müller .

The year 2009

Tommy Haas in the semifinals of the Gerry Weber Open against Philipp Kohlschreiber, 2009

Haas started 2009 at the Australian Open. After two straight wins over Eduardo Schwank and Flavio Cipolla , he challenged Rafael Nadal in the third round , to whom he was defeated 4: 6, 2: 6, 2: 6. In mid-February Haas won his first ATP double title when he triumphed in the final of the San José tournament with his doubles partner Radek Štěpánek over the Indian-Finnish duo Rohan Bopanna and Jarkko Nieminen .

After a few rather moderate tournaments, Haas reached the round of 16 at the French Open. After victories over Andrei Pavel , Leonardo Mayer and Jérémy Chardy , there was a clash with Roger Federer. Haas lost the game after leading a 2-0 set with 7: 6, 7: 5, 4: 6, 0: 6, 2: 6. With the second round, Haas had also set his best result in Paris in 2002. Haas celebrated his first tournament victory in over two years in Halle . In the first rounds he defeated Stefan Koubek , Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Mischa Zverev . In the semifinals there was a duel with Philipp Kohlschreiber , in which Haas won 2: 6, 7: 6 and 7: 6. In the final he met Novak Đoković . Haas won 6: 3, 6: 7 and 6: 1 in the end. With his first tournament win on grass, he was now one of the group of players who won a tournament on all surfaces in their career. After the former Wimbledon winner Michael Stich , he is the second German in this series. The following Wimbledon tournament became his most successful for Haas. After a difficult first round win over Alexander Peya and an injury-related surrender of his opponent Michaël Llodra in round two, it came to a duel with the number 11 seeded Marin Čilić . Both players had to fend off match points before the game had to be stopped in the fifth set due to darkness. The following day, after more than four hours of play, Haas made everything clear and beat the Croatian 7: 5, 7: 5, 1: 6, 6: 7, 10: 8. In the next round of 16 he defeated Igor Andrejew 7: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4. In the quarter-finals there was a new edition of the final of Halle, the opponent was Novak Đoković. Haas succeeded once more in defeating the then number four in the world. He beat the Serbs 7: 5, 7: 6, 4: 6, 6: 3. In the semifinals there was then the opportunity to return the favor for the knockout loss at the French Open. However, the German hardly had a chance against the eventual tournament winner Roger Federer and lost in three sets (6: 7, 5: 7, 3: 6). By reaching the semi-finals, Haas was back in the top 20.

After a three-week tournament break, he played the first hard court tournament in Los Angeles in preparation for the US Open. On the way to the semi-finals he beat Jesse Levine 6: 1, 6: 3 and Marat Safin 7: 6, 6: 2. There he lost for the second time in his career to the eventual tournament winner Sam Querrey 3: 6, 5: 7.

The year 2010

2010 started Haas at the Australian Open . Set at number 18, Haas calculated a lot after several injuries at the end of 2009. He started with a first round win against his compatriot Simon Greul , whom he was able to defeat clearly after losing the first set. In the second round the Serb Janko Tipsarević was waiting . After more than three hours, Haas sealed the entry into the third round with a hard-fought five-set win. In round three, he met the number 10 seeded Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga , whom he was able to defeat in his 2009 tournament victory in Halle. Slightly handicapped by a back injury, Haas couldn't defeat Tsonga, although he served to win the set in the fourth set; he finally lost 4: 6, 6: 3, 1: 6, 5: 7.

The year 2011

After a year off injury, Haas played doubles at the BMW Open in Munich alongside Radek Štěpánek. The two lost their first match in three sets. A few weeks later, Haas started again in singles for the first time with a wildcard at the French Open . In round one he was defeated by the Turkish Marsel İlhan , number 123 in the world rankings, in four sets. Shortly afterwards, the Hamburger also retired in doubles in the opening round, he lost with Philipp Petzschner against the two Indians Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes (6: 2, 3: 6, 2: 6). His subsequent appearance at the lawn tournament in Halle , which he won in 2009, was not crowned with success either. He lost to the Italian Andreas Seppi in the first round (2: 6, 7: 6, 6 , 3: 6). At Wimbledon , too , Haas did not get through the first round. He then celebrated the long-awaited victory in Newport against his compatriot Michael Berrer , but round two was already over. At the US Open Haas was eliminated in the third round against Juan Mónaco .

The year 2012

In 2012 he again performed unexpectedly well. So he reached the semi-finals at the ATP tournament in Munich and reached the third round at the French Open after qualifying. At the Gerry Weber Open in Halle / Westphalia he defeated the top 10 players Tomáš Berdych , Philipp Kohlschreiber and, in the final, the record winner from Halle and world number three Roger Federer in two sets. The tournament victory helped him in the world rankings from 87th to 49th place. In the first round of Wimbledon, Haas met Kohlschreiber again a week later, but he was defeated there in a five-set match.

Due to the success in Halle, Haas was hoping for a nomination for the Olympic Games in London . Although he initially missed the qualification criteria, he could still have slipped into the starting field with a wildcard from the ITF . A prerequisite for Haas would have been a nomination by the German Tennis Association and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB). While the DTB actually nominated Haas after winning the tournament in Halle, the DOSB refrained from making a nomination. The reason given was that Haas had not met any of the qualification criteria required by the ITF. Haas was disappointed with the decision and sharply criticized the DOSB for its decision. The former professional player Michael Stich also disapproved of the DOSB's behavior. It would have been the third Olympic Games for Haas.

In July, Haas fought his way to the final of the tennis tournament in his hometown of Hamburg for the first time after victories against Gilles Simon and Marin Čilić, among others . There he was just defeated by the Argentine Juan Mónaco . Nevertheless, reaching the final meant a jump in the world rankings for Haas; he was again listed in the top 40 in the world. Just two weeks later, Haas also reached the final in Washington . In the semifinals, he clearly defeated the top seeded Mardy Fish in two sets. In the subsequent final he met the Ukrainian Oleksandr Dolhopolow for the first time in his career , to whom he was still subject to the set lead. Nevertheless, Haas was able to advance to number 25 in the world through the success.

From 2012 to 2013 Haas played at TK Grün-Weiss Mannheim in the Bundesliga team , where he had a score of 3: 3.

The year 2013

In 2013 , Haas was able to build on its performance from the previous year. At the Australian Open he failed in the first round, but in San José he reached the final, in which he was defeated by the Canadian Milos Raonic . This enabled Haas to move back into the top 20 and overtake the best German Philipp Kohlschreiber to date . In Delray Beach Haas reached the semifinals, where he failed to Ernests Gulbis . At the Masters in Indian Wells he had to admit defeat to Juan Martín del Potro in the round of 16 . Haas was able to build on his good performances at the Sony Open Tennis . After he had beaten world number one Novak Đoković in the third round , he was only beaten in the semifinals by David Ferrer in three sets. At the ATP tournament in Munich he won the final against defending champion Kohlschreiber 6: 3, 7: 6 (7: 3) and moved up to 13th place in the world rankings. In Madrid he was eliminated in a close match 5: 7, 6: 4, 4: 6 against world number four David Ferrer in the round of 16 after he had already been in the lead with a break in the decisive third set. Haas reported at short notice for the first Power Horse Cup in Düsseldorf, but had to cancel his quarter-final match due to illness.

At the French Open , Haas reached the quarter-finals in 12th position, which means he has now reached the round of eight in all Grand Slam tournaments - as the third German tennis player after Boris Becker and Michael Stich. At the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, he was eliminated as defending champion in the semifinals 6: 3, 3: 6, 4: 6 against the eventual winner Roger Federer. In Wimbledon he was defeated by victories against Dmitri Tursunow , Wang Yeu-tzuoo and Feliciano López to world number one Novak Đoković in the round of 16 1: 6, 4: 6, 6: 7 (4: 7).

After Haas had defeated Paul-Henri Mathieu and Lu Yen-hsun at the US Open without losing a set, he failed in the third round to Michail Juschny . The Erste Bank Open in Vienna won Haas against Robin Haase in the final with 6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 4, it was his 15th title.

The year 2014

At the Australian Open Haas had to give up against Guillermo García-López due to an injury in the first round. In Zagreb he was only defeated in the final to Marin Čilić . In the semi-finals in São Paolo , his damaged shoulder forced him to give up again. At the Masters tournament in Indian Wells , he was eliminated in the round of 16 against Federer.

On his 36th birthday, Haas rose to 17th place among those who had reached a top 20 position at the age of 36. These included tennis legends Rod Laver , Jimmy Connors , Roy Emerson , Arthur Ashe , Ken Rosewall and Andre Agassi .

At the French Open , his sore shoulder, which had been operated on several times in the past, forced him to give up in the first round against Jürgen Zopp . At the subsequent lawn tournament in Halle , he had to cancel his participation the day before his first game. On June 16, it was announced that Haas would be undergoing surgery for his shoulder injury, causing him to be out of the rest of the 2014 ATP World Tour . Nevertheless, he announced a possible comeback for the 2015 season . At the time of the operation, he was in 20th place in the world rankings .

The years 2015–2018

On June 8, 2015, Haas completed his first professional tournament at the MercedesCup 2015 after almost a year of injury . He won his first round match against Michail Kukuschkin in two sets, before he was eliminated in two sets against Bernard Tomic . In all other tournaments of the year he was always eliminated in the second round at the latest. At Wimbledon he defeated Dušan Lajović and lost in the second round to Milos Raonic in four sets. At the US Open he failed to Fernando Verdasco in a hard-fought five-set match (6: 3, 1: 6, 7: 6, 3 , 3: 6, 1: 6). Since the Erste Bank Open in Vienna in October 2015, where he lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the opening round, Haas has not played a match due to a foot injury.

After not playing a tournament in 2016, Haas made his comeback at the 2017 Australian Open . However, he had to give up the game against Benoît Paire prematurely in round one . A few days before the tournament started, Haas announced that he would play his final season in 2017. Haas finally played his last game of the 2017 season at the tournament in Kitzbühel against Jan-Lennard Struff (3: 6, 6: 7). After he was not considered for a wildcard at the US Open 2017 and did not start at the tournament in Vienna , he had his management announce the end of his (supposed) career, which, however, was not officially confirmed by the end of 2017.

At the beginning of the Australian Open 2018 , Haas appeared as a consultant to tennis professional Lucas Pouille and was cautious about the end of his career as a player. At this point, he did not want to rule out a return to the tour. On February 12, 2018, his final retirement was largely assumed because of an interview he gave to a California newspaper. On March 15, 2018, he announced his official resignation at the Masters in Indian Wells .
