The 2008/09 season of the Continental Hockey League was the first season of the newly established Russian professional ice hockey league . The regular season started on September 2, 2008 and ended on February 26, 2009. This was followed by the playoffs , the winner of which Ak Bars Kazan received the Gagarin Cup .
The league started its premiere season with 24 teams from Russia , Kazakhstan , Latvia and Belarus , including the 20 participants in the former Super League from the previous season. In the run-up to the season, Avtomobilist Yekaterinburg was replaced by Chimik Voskressensk as Yekaterinburg was struggling with financial problems.
mode
In the regular season , the teams, which are divided into four divisions of six teams each, meet four times in each division and twice against each other team, whereby each team plays 56 games.
For a win in the regular playing time of 60 minutes, a team receives three points, the losing opponent receives nothing. If a team wins in overtime or in a shootout , they only get two points, while the loser still gets one point.
Following the regular season, the playoffs follow , for which the 16 teams with the best points qualify. The division winners occupy the first four positions on the seeding list. The first two playoff rounds will be played in the best-of-five mode, the semi-final series and the final series in the best-of-seven mode .

All-star game
As part of the season, the 1st KHL All-Star Game was held on January 10, 2009 . Two teams chosen by the fans met each other. The team named after and led by Alexei Yashin consisted of Russian players, while the team named and led after Jaromír Jágr provided players from the rest of the world. The fans could also decide on the format of Russia versus the rest of the world or East versus West . As head coach were for the team Yashin Sergei Michaljow his capacity coach of defending champion Salavat Yulaev Ufa and for the team Jágr of Canadians Barry Smith , head coach of SKA St. Petersburg determined.
The venue of the game was the Red Square in Moscow , which means that the game was held in the open air at temperatures around −16 ° C. A temporary play area was installed there for the game. The game, which Jágrs team just won 7: 6, was attended by 2,500 spectators. In addition to Jágr, the world selection team included Marcel Hossa , Robert Esche , Ray Emery , Ben Clymer and Pavel Brendl .
Special occurrences
During the game between HK Avangard Omsk and Vitjas Chekhov , which was played in the Vityas Ice Palace on October 13, 2008 , 19-year-old Alexei Cherepanov collapsed shortly before the end of the game. Resuscitation measures were unsuccessful. Cherepanov, who played for Awangard, was considered a hopeful talent who had already drawn attention in several international tournaments and was trusted to make the leap into the North American NHL .
The HK Awangard Omsk caused another stir in the aftermath. On January 8, 2009 they took the Canadian Wayne Fleming on leave, the second head coach of the current season. The dismissal happened atypically during the second break in the game against Vityas Chekhov when the score was 0: 1. The rest of the game, which Omsk won 2-1, was supervised by the previous assistant coach Igor Nikitin . Later it turned out, however, that Fleming should continue to hold the office and only one third had been released from the manager in this.
