List of Johanneskirchen

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johannes churches or Johanneskirchen are church buildings that bear the patronage after a church saint named Johannes or are named after a person named Johannes. In most cases, the naming refers to John the Baptist (Johannes Baptist) . Johannes Baptist is derived from the Greek Ἰωάννης ὁ βαπτιστής Iōánnēs ho baptistēs , Latinized Iohannes Baptista . Churches with the patronage of the Evangelist John and church buildings that are named after both Johns are less numerous . For other Johannes churches all over the world Johannes Nepomuk is the patron.

If necessary, further refer Johanneskirchen on other saints, as here are listed below:

The form Johannis corresponds to the genitive in the medieval Latin form Ecclesia Sancti Ioannis "Church of St. John".

The name John was common in New Testament times. There have long been uncertainties about the figures of John in the Bible, especially about the identity of the apostle John and the favorite disciple of Jesus ( Jn 21 : 2–20 EU ), in the "Johannine question" about the identity of the author of the Gospel of John , the Epistles  of John and Revelation of John . In the case of ancient church dedications, an assignment is sometimes unclear in retrospect, so that an attempt was made to take both Johannes' into account. The double patronage became popular after the early medieval investiture controversy , when the special veneration of the Baptist began, because the two symbolize active and contemplative life, active mission in the world (Baptist) and scribalism (Evangelist). The most important church of this double patronage is the Papal Church of Sancta Sanctorum San Giovanni in Laterano (together with Santissimo Salvatore , in honor of the Savior ).

The list is arranged alphabetically by country, within the countries it can be sorted according to various aspects. It concentrates on the lemmas already available in the German language Wikipedia and does not claim to be complete. Those St. John's churches that have been converted into mosques (e.g. St. John's basilica in Damascus, with the head of St. John and thus the first and most important St. John's church, currently the Umayyad mosque ) are not part of the list.
