The Mercedes-Benz W 08 was a passenger car of the Mercedes-Benz brand and the successor to the Mercedes-Benz type 400 . It was presented under the name Mercedes-Benz 18/80 PS type Nürburg 460 in autumn 1928 at the Paris Motor Show as the first Daimler-Benz vehicle with an eight-cylinder engine .
The Nürburg type can be considered the first popemobile , since Pope Pius XI. received a vehicle specially equipped for him from Daimler-Benz in 1930.
Mercedes-Benz type Nürburg 460/460 K (with high frame, 1928–1929)
The car was hastily designed by Ferdinand Porsche in order to be able to stand up to the Horch 8 , which appeared two years earlier . Porsche resorted to the standard construction of the high frame (without lowering between the axles), which was common at the time, which gave the new model an outdated look even for the time. It was equipped with a side-controlled eight-cylinder in-line engine with a displacement of 4622 cm³, which produces 80 hp (59 kW) and gives the vehicles a top speed of 100 km / h. The car has rigid axles, all four wheels are suspended from semi-elliptical leaf springs and braked mechanically with the assistance of suction air.
In addition to the long chassis with a 3670 mm wheelbase, a shortened chassis with a 3430 mm wheelbase was available for external bodybuilders made to customer specifications . These models are called "460 K". Touring cars with four and six seats, a four-door sedan, a Pullman sedan with six seats and a four-door Cabriolet D were available from the factory.
The bulky, old-fashioned and very expensive automobile was not in great demand, so that it was replaced by a more modern low-frame model after just one year. For six years, the high-frame models that had already been produced lay on heap and had to be sold at discounts.
Mercedes-Benz type Nürburg 460/460 K (with low frame, 1929–1933)
Due to the moderate success, Daimler-Benz chief designer Hans Nibel revised the model. The technology was taken over from the predecessor, with an overdrive gear also being available for the four-speed transmission on request. The result was a much more elegant car with the modern low frame, the side members of which were lowered between the axles. In addition to the lower entry height, flatter structures were also possible. A chassis with a smaller wheelbase was also available again. Despite this modernization, the new low-frame Mercedes had lower sales than the Horch 8.
In addition to the familiar bodies, a two-door Cabriolet C and the Pullman Cabriolet F were now also available.
Mercedes-Benz type Nürburg 500 (1931-1934)
A model with a more powerful engine was also offered on the long chassis from 1931. This has a displacement of 4918 cm³ and develops 100 hp (74 kW). The top speed is 110 km / h.
Mercedes-Benz type 500 N (1934–1936)
In 1934 the successor of the Nürburg type was presented. The engine remained the same, but the body line was modernized: the flat radiator grille of the Nürburg was replaced by a slightly swept-back model. The windshield was also slightly tilted backwards. The top speed increased to 115 km / h.
Mercedes-Benz type 500 N (1936–1939)
In 1936 the car received a more powerful engine. With the same displacement, it generates 110 hp (81 kW) and accelerates the vehicle up to 123 km / h. The radiator grille and windshield were tilted even further back, and the crossbar to attach the headlights was removed.
In 1939 the model series was discontinued after a total of 3842 vehicles had been produced without a successor. It was the last Mercedes-Benz model with wooden spoke wheels and rigid axles.
