Olympic flag

The list of IOC country codes contains 241 entries, of which 204 are currently in use. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) uses a three-letter abbreviation for each National Olympic Committee (NOC) (with the exception of the Russian Empire).

Many of the IOC's abbreviations do not match the ISO3166-1 alpha-3 (country codes) of the ISO . For their part, the IOC abbreviations are not binding on the international sports associations. For example, FIFA uses a different abbreviation than the IOC in over 20 countries (then mostly, but not always, the ISO abbreviation). Most sports associations and events such as B. the Paralympic Games , the  Commonwealth Games , the FINA (swimming) or World Athletics (track and field) adhere exactly to the IOC codes. This often also applies to associations of non-Olympic sports, such as FIDE (chess). For countries that do not belong to the Olympic family, these associations add their own abbreviations as required.

history

At the 1956 Winter Games and the 1960 Summer Games, three-letter codes were used for the first time in the official reports for the participating teams and for each NOK. Initially, these abbreviations were based on the host's language (e.g. GIA for Japan comes from the Italian name for Japan: Giappone , since the 1956 Winter Games and the 1960 Summer Games were held in Italy) or were derived from the French name (e.g. B. SUI for Switzerland, French: Suisse ).

Most of the abbreviations were standardized for the 1972 Winter Games. But there were always changes in the years that followed. Political changes over the years also led to changes in the abbreviations, such as B. after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, after the disintegration of Yugoslavia, after the accession of the GDR to the FRG Germany or for Malawi, Libya, Myanmar and South Sudan.

EUA	All-German team	1956-1964	GER (1956–1964) / The IOC only introduced this abbreviation after the reunification of Germany in order to take account of the special political situation. The participants of the all-German team emerged from decisive battles between the athletes from the Federal Republic of Germany and the German Democratic Republic. After the German Democratic Republic was recognized by the IOC on October 6, 1965, the athletes from the two German states started in the teams FRG and GDR .
