The Olympic history of Egypt begins in 1910 with the founding of the Egyptian NOK , al-Ladschna al-ulimbiyya al-misriyya . In the same year the NOK was recognized by the IOC . Before the NOK was founded, two Egyptian athletes took part in the 1906 Olympic Intermediate Games in Athens .

In total, Egyptian athletes were able to win 31 medals at summer games. With seven gold, ten silver and fourteen bronze medals, Egypt ranks 55th in the all-time medal table of the Olympic Games . Weightlifters are the most successful participants. So far (as of 2017) they have won 13 medals, including five gold, three silver and five bronze medals.

Participation in the Olympic Games

Before World War II

At the Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 , an Egyptian athlete took part in official games for the first time. The fencer Ahmed Hassanein competed in epee and foil fencing. Egypt was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time , so Hassanein couldn't stand for his homeland. In addition, there is uncertainty as to whether Hassanein even took part, as the official report lists all reports but does not contain any results. Hassanein can be found in the report (page 464) in the foil competition in group 14, while he is no longer listed in the second round. In the epee competition (page 469) it is listed in group 2, but is no longer listed in the second round here either.

Wrestler Ibrahim Moustafa became Olympic champion in 1928 after finishing fourth in 1924

Athletes under the Egyptian flag competed for the first time in Antwerp in 1920 . A delegation of 23 athletes took part in six sports, most of which were provided by the Egyptian national soccer team. There were no particular successes. At the Olympic Games four years later in Paris , 34 athletes competed in eight sports, plus one participant in an art competition. The fourth places of the weightlifter Ahmed Samy in the middleweight division and the light heavyweight wrestler Ibrahim Moustafa , who fought in the Greco-Roman style, received attention . Krikor Agathon was the first Egyptian to participate in two different sports (fencing and shooting).

In 1928 in Amsterdam the first medals and Olympic victories were celebrated. On July 29, 1928, weightlifter Sayed Nosseir became the first Egyptian medalist and Olympic champion with his light heavyweight victory. Nosseir won his gold medal with a new Olympic record. The Egyptian national soccer team caused a surprise by reaching the semi-finals. After victories over Turkey in the round of 16 (7: 1) and Portugal in the quarter-finals (2: 1), the Egyptians lost 6-0 to Argentina in the semifinals . In the game for the bronze medal, there was a 3-11 defeat against Italy , which is still the highest-scoring final of all Olympic football competitions with 14 goals.

At the Games in Los Angeles in 1932 no athletes were sent. Four years later in Berlin , 60 athletes took part and with five medals, including two Olympic victories, ensured the best result for an Egyptian Olympic team to date, along with the result in London in 1948. Notably, all five medals were won by weightlifters.

1940s and 1950s

Mahmoud Fayad wins featherweight lifting in 1948

In 1948, the Egyptian NOK sent a total of 99 participants to the first summer games after the end of the Second World War in London . The team was just as successful as in 1936 with five medals, again including two Olympic victories. This time the weightlifters won the two gold medals, but the Greco-Roman style wrestlers were also successful with one silver and one bronze medal.

The largest Egyptian delegation to date went to the 1952 Summer Games in Helsinki with 114 participants. The number should not be exceeded until 2012. A bronze medal in wrestling was won. The semifinal participation of the fencing team with the foil should also be emphasized. In weightlifting, the most successful sport to date, only Mohamed Ibrahim Saleh was able to convince in the middle heavyweight division with 4th place.

Because of the Suez crisis , Egypt boycotted the Melbourne Summer Games in 1956 . However, three participants were sent to Stockholm for the equestrian games that had been held five months earlier .

1960s and 1970s

Egypt , the Kingdom of Yemen and Syria merged to form the United Arab States in 1958 . At the Summer Games in 1960 in Rome one consisting only of Egyptians Olympic team was sent under the name Arab United Republic with the country code UAR aground. In addition to two medals, silver in wrestling and bronze in boxing, there was a surprising fourth place for the show jumping team. Weightlifter Mohamed Mahmoud Ibrahim also came fourth in the heavyweight division.

Despite the dissolution of the confederation, Egypt kept the name UAR until 1968. In the following games to Rome there were no medal winners for 24 years. The Egyptian soccer team finished fourth in Tokyo in 1964 . In the game for the bronze medal, the German team lost 1: 3.

1970s and 1980s

As in Mexico City in 1968 , the Egyptian Olympic team remained in Munich in 1972 , this time again under the name Egypt (EGY), without winning any medals.

It was not until three days after the 1976 Summer Games opened in Montreal that the Egyptian NOK withdrew its athletes from competitions to join the boycott of African countries. Four of the athletes, three boxers and one weightlifter, had already competed at this point. The basketball team had also played their first game. Egypt's NOK followed the US boycott and stayed away from the 1980 Moscow Games .

In 1984 , the alpine ski racer Jamil El-Reedy was the first and so far (as of 2014) only time an Egyptian athlete took part in winter games.

At the summer games in Los Angeles in the same year there was the first medal win to celebrate in 24 years. The judoka Mohamed Ali Rashwan won the silver medal in the open class. The Egyptian NOK sent women to Los Angeles for the first time. The swimmers Sherwite Hafez and her sister Nevine Hafez started the 100 meter freestyle on July 29, 1984 as the first Egyptian women athletes at the Olympic Games.

The 1988 Games in Seoul were a failure for Egypt. Only a fourth place in the super heavyweight wrestler Hassan El-Haddad in Greco-Roman style stood out.

1990s

The 1992 Barcelona games were just as unsuccessful for the Egyptian team. At the age of 14 years and 286 days, the swimmer Rania El-Wani, the youngest Egyptian participant to date , competed in the 100 meter freestyle run on July 26, 1992 .

There was also nothing to celebrate at the 1996 Atlanta Games . With three wins and three defeats, the men's handball team reached a remarkable sixth place.

2000 until today

Even in Sydney in 2000 , Egyptian participants had no chance. At the age of 49 years and 329 days, sport shooter Mohamed Khorshed, the oldest Egyptian competitor to date , competed in the skeet on September 23, 2000 . Khorshed took part in the Olympic Games for the fifth time in Sydney.

In Athens 2004 , the wrestler Karam Ibrahim won the first medal in 20 years with his gold medal in Greco-Roman style. His Olympic victory was also the first victory in 56 years. One silver and three bronze medals made these games the third most successful summer games for Egypt.

A bronze medal was added in Beijing in 2008 . The weightlifter Abeer Abdelrahman also achieved a good ranking with her fifth place in the light heavyweight division.

Abeer Abdelrahman at their competition

The Egyptian NOK sent 109 participants, 36 of them women, to the 2012 Summer Games in London . In London, Karam Ibrahim was able to win silver in the light heavyweight division in the Greco-Roman style. After gold in 2004, Ibrahim is the most successful Egyptian athlete at the Olympic Games. In addition to another silver medal from foil fencer Alaaeldin Abouelkassem , the weightlifting team in particular ensured top placements. So there was a fourth and a fifth place in the men to celebrate. It wasn't until 2016 that it emerged that previous weightlifting medal winners in the class up to 75 kg had been doped. The winner, the Kazakh Swetlana Podobedowa , the Russian Natalja Sabolotnaja in second place and the Belarusian Irina Kulescha had to return their medals. The up to then fifth placed Abeer Abdelrahman came in second and thus became the first Egyptian to win an Olympic medal.

With 120 participants, 37 of them women, the strongest Egyptian Olympic team to date started in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 . Three bronze medals could be won. On August 10, 2016, weightlifter Sara Ahmed became the first Olympic medalist in Egypt to receive her medal on the podium.

Application to host the Olympic Games

Egyptian cities competed four times to host the Summer Olympics. Alexandria applied to host the 6th Olympic Games in 1916 and was defeated at the 14th IOC session in Stockholm , the election went to Berlin . Alexandria also applied to host the 11th Olympic Games in 1936. Berlin won the election again, this time at the 29th IOC session in Barcelona . Alexandria's third application was also unsuccessful. The choice for hosting the 12th Olympic Games in 1940 went to Tokyo at the 35th IOC session in Berlin .

Cairo submitted an application to host the 29th Olympic Games in 2008. However, the application was not accepted by the IOC.
