map

Aukrug ( Low German Aukrog ) is a municipality in the district of Rendsburg-Eckernförde in Schleswig-Holstein . The community was created on December 31, 1969 through the amalgamation of the previously independent communities Bargfeld (with the district Tönsheide), Böken, Bünzen, Homfeld (with the district Bucken) and Innien. It derives its name from an area designation.

geography

Location and geology

The community is a state-approved resort and is located in the heart of the 380 km² Aukrug nature park with meadows and fields, heather, moors, ponds and small rivers. However, due to the mining of peat and the subsequent production of peat charcoal , which is produced in a similar way to charcoal , the bog areas in the municipality have declined sharply. Today only the Viertshöher Moor , a raised moor in the Böken district, is preserved. The Bünzau and Höllenau flow through Aukrug . 351 hectares of the 1000 hectare Iloo forest belong to the municipality.

Aukrug is on the federal highway 430 and the Neumünster – Heide railway line , the so-called Westbahn. Today the line is operated by the nordbahn railway company .

The geographic coordinates for Aukrug are: latitude 54.0825 °, longitude 9.7842 °.

history

The name Aukrug was originally an area name and comes from the Low German name "in de Aukrögen" and means something like in the curvature of the floodplains . The exact name for the area around the five villages of Innien, Böken, Bünzen, Bargfeld and Homfeld was Nortorfer Aukrug , as there was also an Aukrug near Neumünster and Rendsburg . Innien, the oldest district, was mentioned as early as 1128.

From April 1, 1970 to December 31, 2011, the previously unofficial community belonged to the Aukrug district with its seat in Aukrug (district of Innien, where the community hall is today at Bargfelder Strasse 10). On January 1, 2012, the Aukrug office merged with the Mittelholstein office , with its seat in Hohenwestedt .

Postal history

In 1881 a post office was opened in Innien . In 1908 a post office was built and the agency was converted into an independent post office .

Chronicle of Aukrugs

The "History of the Aukrugs" has already been written down several times in the book of the same name. The first edition was commissioned in 1907 and appeared in 1913; the author was Georg Reimer . The Aukruger Chronik is one of the oldest printed village chronicles in Schleswig-Holstein. New editions appeared in 1959 (revised new edition), 1978 (edition from 1959 with continuation) and 1995 (additions and supplements). The books have been available as online versions since 2020 and are updated in the Aukrug History Wiki .

coat of arms

Blazon : "In green over a silver wavy bar a silver wheel with four spokes (wheel cross), covered in the middle and at the four outer ends of the spokes with a total of five red rose petals with golden seed pods and golden sepals."

The green color symbolizes the natural location in the Aukrug Nature Park . The silver wave bar expresses the location on the Buckener Au , Mitbek and Bünzau rivers and refers to the location of the area in the "curvature of the floodplains".

The districts of Bargfeld, Böken, Bünzen, Homfeld and Innien are represented in the coat of arms by the five roses. The connecting wheel shows how these five formerly independent villages are growing together. The wheel also symbolizes the convenient location at the intersection of Landesstrasse 121 Kiel - Itzehoe and Lübschen Trade , today federal road 430 .

Partnerships

Attractions

The list of cultural monuments in Aukrug includes the cultural monuments entered in the list of monuments of Schleswig-Holstein.

The region is very well developed for tourism.

Local museum "Dat ole Hus"

Dat ole Hus is a local museum in the Bünzen district. The building was first built in 1700 and 1804 after a fire as thatched Kate rebuilt. A well-known travel destination is the “Museumskroog”, where freshly baked waffles with cherry groats are served on the old stove.

The Bünzer watermill

The Bünzer watermill is a well-preserved watermill that has probably been around since the Middle Ages. The mill is shown as a landmark on the tourist information board on federal motorway 7 .

Aukruger Church

The Evangelical Church of Aukrug is a cross-shaped hall church consecrated in 1893 in the neo-Gothic style. The design of the tower, which was only built in 1922, comes from the imperial building officer and church builder Jürgen Kröger , who lived in Innien in retirement.

Water tower in Aukrug-Böken

One of the smallest water towers in Schleswig-Holstein is in Böken. It is still used today to supply the community with water.

The Boxberg

With a height of 76.8 meters, the Boxberg is one of the highest peaks in the Aukrug Nature Park . From its top, the viewer has a wide view over the wooded landscape of the nature park.

Tower hill castle "Bori" in Bünzen

The early medieval Bori castle is located in Bünzen on the sports field . The plant belongs to the so-called moths , which were increasingly created from the 12th century. Another, albeit hardly recognizable, tower hill is located in Bargfeld .

Viertshöher Moor

On the road to Nortorf is the Viertshöher Moor , a rewetted high moor with a circular hiking trail. The ring-shaped mounds that are on the site are remains from the manufacture of peat charcoal, which was made similar to charcoal .

Kluesbarg megalithic grave in Homfeld

The Kluesbarg , a beech- covered barrow on Itzehoer Straße, is a Bronze Age grave complex in Aukrug.

Dithmarscher Mountains

The Dithmarscher Berge are three barrows from the Bronze Age on the road to Ehndorf , which are presumably so named as a reminder of the battle in Bünzen (1317). The burial mounds at Aukrug-Bargfeld are also located in the municipality.

"Lübsche Trade" to Meezen

The forest path from Aukrug-Homfeld to Meezen is an originally preserved section of the old Lübsche Trade route . There is a memorial stone at the confluence with federal highway 430.

Aurochs

Heck cattle have been kept in the nature park since 2002 to maintain some areas . Through their eating behavior, the cattle encourage the emergence of a diverse flora and fauna and make further maintenance of the pasture landscape superfluous. The two pastures are located west of the Bargfelder Moor on the Bünzau and in Aukrug-Homfeld in the spacious Buckener-Au lowland. In Homfeld you can observe the Heck cattle, resting and breeding birds from two observation towers without having to enter the area.

Tönsheider Forest nature reserve

On the 67 hectare site east of the specialist clinic, in the Tönsheider Forest nature reserve, there are larger, partly natural forest areas with interspersed heather areas.

Economy and Infrastructure

The local economic life is characterized by small businesses from handicrafts, trade and agriculture. The asparagus cultivation should be emphasized . The five local asparagus farmers cultivate around five percent of the asparagus growing area in Schleswig-Holstein (as of 2015). Aukrug is located on the asparagus road Schleswig-Holstein , and in 2005 the first asparagus queen for Schleswig-Holstein was crowned here. The recreational value of the municipal area makes tourism an important economic factor.

Public facilities

Old building of the specialist clinic Aukrug

The Fachklinik Aukrug is a traditional spa and rehabilitation clinic, which, like the Erlenhof, a residential and workshop of the Inner Mission for disabled people, is known nationwide.

education

In the village there is a family center with a kindergarten , crèche , forest kindergarten and daycare center as well as a primary school. The Tannenfelde Training Center, the business educational institution in Schleswig-Holstein, is located in Tönsheide.

Leisure and Tourism

In Aukrug there are signposted hiking trails u. a. the nature park path . They lead through forests and partly follow the course of the Bünzer Au . There is also a glider airfield, which can be used for guest flights for a donation, and is open from mid-March to mid-October.

In Innien there is an outdoor pool with a paddling pool and diving tower. Since May 2006 there has been a mobile home parking space at the outdoor pool . There is a barbecue area for everyone in the extensive sports and leisure facilities.
