Plans for new bridges
There is an expert opinion, "Improvement of local rail passenger transport (SPNV) between Cologne, Cologne / Bonn Airport and Bonn" on the S 13 planning, commissioned by the Ministry of Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia.
A road bridge over the Rhine south of Cologne is under discussion. The then North Rhine-Westphalia Transport Minister Michael Groschek (SPD) supported the construction of such a Rhine crossing in 2013. As a project of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the structure was included in the Federal Transport Infrastructure Plan 2030 with the category "urgent need"; it is run as the "Rheinspange 553" project (as an extension of the BAB 553 on the left bank of the Rhine across the Rhine to BAB 59 ). It would primarily connect the A 59 and A 555 motorways between Cologne and Bonn and could cost around EUR 200 million.
The planning for the construction of the Middle Rhine Bridge between Sankt Goar and Sankt Goarshausen in the UNESCO World Heritage Upper Middle Rhine Valley has not been pursued by the state government of Rhineland-Palatinate since 2011. Here, the Rhine between Mainz and Koblenz does not have a Rhine crossing over a stretch of 84 kilometers.
Another bridge is under discussion in the area between Ingelheim Ingelheim / Bingen and Rüdesheim . A citizens' initiative has formed here that votes in favor of examining all options.
For decades there have been controversial approaches to a Rhine bridge near Altrip south of Ludwigshafen and a second Rhine bridge near Karlsruhe .
