European folklore festival
The European Folklore Festival ( proper spelling : European folklore festival ) is a one-week folk dance and folk music event that has been taking place in Neustadt in Holstein since 1951 . The specialty of this festival is that the invited groups are accommodated by families from Neustadt during the event. Initially, the event was referred to as the European Costume Week, until the name was changed to European Folklore Festival in 2004 in an effort to create a more modern, contemporary appearance . This festival is one of the oldest of its kind in Europe and is organized on a voluntary basis.
history
In 1951, Gerd Beier, the head of the local adult education center at the time , suggested holding a costume week. Exercise should also folklore groups from the various states will be invited and groups which Silesia, Sudeten German, East Prussian and Pomeranian Customs cultivated and therefore their home and landscape show in music and dance. At this meeting, amateur musicians and folk dancers were supposed to represent their homeland in an authentic way.
The European Trachtenwoche association was founded to sponsor the event, and the mayor of Neustadt at the time, Paul Haas , was elected as its first chairman . The first event took place in the same year from August 4th to 11th, 1951. The poster for this German costume week on the Baltic Sea was designed by the lithographer and painter A. Paul Weber .
In addition to groups from Germany, the singing and play group of the Upper Austrian teachers' association from Linz was the first foreign group to take part in 1951 . The participation of this group triggered the fundamental question in the board of trustees as to how far one should invite other non-German groups in the future to come to a European folklore week. It was a concern of the organizers to overcome the isolation of Germany after the Second World War and to express the wish for a peaceful coexistence in Europe. With this in mind, groups from other European countries and later also from overseas were invited to the events in the following years .
Event concept
One of the club European garb week elected and honorary active board of trustees organized the event. In addition to citizens of the city of Neustadt, the board of trustees includes the mayor as well as members of the magistrate and the city administration. His tasks are advertising , finances, program design, procurement of accommodation , group support and press work .
The European Folklore Festival usually takes place every three years (annually until 1960). The duration of the folklore festival is eight days (Saturday – Saturday). The participants are accommodated and fed by families from Neustadt. In addition to the opening and closing events, the program of events includes a pageant , “dancing in the streets”, a church concert and daily afternoon and evening performances by the dance and music groups involved. In addition, there are performances by dance and music groups in hospitals, nursing homes and old people's homes in the city, so that their patients / residents can also take part in the event. In previous years, in addition to the church concert, there was also an instrumental and choral concert with folk music from the regions of origin of the participating groups. Group evenings are also an integral part of the program. Other groups from the surrounding area take part in the parade as well as in individual events.
The performances of the dance and music groups take place on the Neustädter Marktplatz on a partially covered stage of 10 m × 14 m, which is equipped with professional sound and lighting technology . For the audience a stand grandstand with 2500 seats and a standing area for about another 1,000 people are available.
The European Folklore Festival in Neustadt in Holstein was officially recognized by the International Council for the Organization of Folklore Festivals and Folk Art (CIOFF).

Organizers and individuals
The European Folklore Festival was awarded in 2013 by the Lebendige Stadt Foundation in a Europe-wide competition as one of the most beautiful city festivals with prize money of 1,250 euros.
The SPD Schleswig-Holstein honored the European Folklore Festival 2013 with the special prize of the Willi Piecyk Prize , “[...] because Neustadt shows that Europe can be happy. With their festival, the organizers are realizing a 'Europe of the People'. "
In 2013 the Board of Trustees of the European Folklore Festival was also awarded the Ostholstein District Culture Prize. The reason stated:
“For more than 60 years, the festival has represented a concept that is unique in this form for the connection of international cultures and thus makes a contribution to peace in Europe. It is particularly noteworthy that, thanks to the costume week, groups from the member states of the former Eastern Bloc were invited to the West German Neustadt during the most intense times of the Cold War and were enthusiastic about the festival of European folk cultures with both hospitality and friendship. [...] In combination with the accommodation of the international guests with host families from Neustadt, there is a cultural and international understanding that is unparalleled. "
In 2016, the CIOFF Central Europe section awarded Heinrich Evers its Silver Badge of Honor. He was chairman of the board of trustees of the 28th European Folklore Festival and had represented the Neustadt event for decades at the annual CIOFF meetings of the Germany section.
