fauna

The Hasties Swamps (German: Hastiessüumpf) are a mecca for bird lovers. The wetland provides refuge for a variety of both native and migratory birds. Seasonal fluctuations in water levels change both the type and size of the habitat , which in turn attracts different creatures. More than 220 bird species have been counted in the wetlands and the surrounding woodland.

The best time is in the dry season from April to October, when the water areas in the park are visited by numerous water birds. Up to 1500 crack-footed geese ( Anseranas semipalmata ) can then be seen at the same time from a two-story observation post.

Migratory birds such as the common sandpiper ( Actitis hypoleucos ) and the Japanese cassin ( Gallinago hardwickii ) stop here between August and September on their way from Japan to South Australia. From March to April they return to the north. The pointed tail sandpiper ( Calidris acuminata ) comes from Siberia to escape the arctic winter. From New Guinea , for example, the rainbow spider ( Merops ornatus ), the Asian koel ( Eudynamys scolopacea ) and the grumpy cuckoo ( Scythrops novaehollandiae ) visit the swamps.
