The 17 regional centers (central locations) in Austria

The list of cities in Austria provides an overview of the development of the population of cities in Austria . There is also an alphabetical list of all cities in the country and an overview of the incorporated and former cities.

About the term city

Statistically every municipality in Austria is considered a city with more than 10,000 inhabitants. In a statistic presented in cooperation with the Austrian Association of Cities and Statistics Austria , there were 71 cities in Austria with more than 10,000 inhabitants on January 1, 2009.

The statistics of the cities and municipalities include all persons registered with their main residence in Austria. Since 1 March 2002, the Statistics Austria introduced a population register  ( Population Register , POPREG) in which the data from the Central Register  (ZMR), which the Ministry of the Interior  is performed (BMI), are processed. It replaced the population extrapolation based on the census results that had been practiced until then . In order to be counted as a resident in the Population Register, this person must be registered with their main place of residence in Austria for at least 90 days without interruption on the reference date. Previously, however, all reports from the local registration authorities were taken into account regardless of the length of stay.

In contrast to this, there is the municipal legal status of the municipality , which is independent of the size of the population. Therefore there are several cities in Austria that do not meet the official statistical criterion. As of January 1, 2013, there were exactly 201 municipalities.

A statutory city ​​(city with the rank of a district) must have at least 20,000 inhabitants (see Art. 116 Z 3 B-VG ), but three statutory cities with historical city rights also have significantly fewer inhabitants. In the area of ​​over 20,000 inhabitants there are 25 cities, 12 of which are statutory cities.

For subdivisions in small , middle - and large cities in Austria there are various limits at 5,000, 10,000, 20,000, 40,000, 50,000 and 100,000, depending on the context or Landesüblichkeit. Statistics Austria uses around 40,000 to 100,000 inhabitants for medium-sized towns and less for small towns. The Local Agenda 21 project (LA21) refers to small and medium-sized towns , whereby in Styria the area of ​​5,000 to 50,000 inhabitants is specifically addressed.

Statistical

Austria extends over 294 km in a north-south direction and over 573 km in a west-east direction.

• The northernmost city in Austria is Litschau with an area of ​​81.08 km² and 2176 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) .
• The southernmost location is Ferlach , which has an area of ​​117.31 km² and a population of 7123 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) .
• Feldkirch with an area of ​​34.33 km² and 34,210 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is the most westerly of the Austrian cities and
• Hainburg an der Donau with an area of ​​25.02 km² and 6837 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is the easternmost.

By far the largest city and the largest conurbation is the capital Vienna . With 1,911,191 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) around a fifth of the total population lives there, with around 2.5 million in the metropolitan area of ​​Vienna , almost a third of Austria in Vienna and the surrounding area. In addition to Vienna, Austria has five other large cities (over 100,000 inhabitants).

As a result of incorporation , a number of very large municipalities developed, especially in the 1970s, whose actual core town is only a small town: Wolfsberg in Carinthia , for example , the third largest municipality in Austria after Vienna and Mariazell , with around 25,000 inhabitants is only among the twenty largest cities . Or the fourth largest in terms of area, Zwettl , with 10,779 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) is only among the 80 largest, the actual city has around 4,000 inhabitants.

A major problem, especially in economically weak areas, is the emigration ( rural exodus ) of the rural population to the urban conurbations, but most cities themselves also suffer from emigration from the core city ( suburbanization to the “ suburban belt”). The swallowing of these surrounding communities by the cities has largely come to a standstill today, the trend is towards regionalism and spatial planning central location concepts, which are organized supraregional with municipal associations of the city and the surrounding area.

The population figures refer to the respective municipality area. Sometimes they contain small suburbs, for example near Krems , but sometimes also many incorporated neighboring towns, for example near Wolfsberg .

Urban regions according to Statistics Austria

The last delimitation was made in 2001 and is no longer updated.

The Statistics Austria 34 has statistical urban regions defined on a core area of the city (as central site ) and its surrounding communities, and an outer zone based.

Together they comprise 5.584 million inhabitants (as of January 1, 2013), which is around 66% of the total population of Austria . Three quarters of this (4.14 million) were in the core zones and around 1.44 million in the outer zones.

According to the population of the urban region, four size classes can be distinguished:

• City region Vienna, with satellite cities Baden, Bad Vöslau, Klosterneuburg, Korneuburg, Stockerau
• 7 further large city regions with more than 100,000 inhabitants in the core zone
• 9 medium-sized city regions with 40,000 to 100,000 inhabitants in the core zone
• 17 small town regions with fewer than 40,000 inhabitants in the core zone

By far the largest agglomeration in Austria is Vienna, with a population of around 2.238 million. This means that around a quarter of Austria's population is concentrated in the capital region.
