geography

The municipality of Fays is located in the Vosges at an altitude of 460 m above sea level, 18 kilometers east of Épinal and 30 kilometers southwest of Saint-Dié .

The area of the 4.83 km² municipal area extends from the right side of the Volognetal in the southeast to the wooded heights ( Forêt de Faîte ) of a Vosges foothills in the northwest, which reaches as far as the Moselle before Épinal. The relaxed settlement image of the village is about 50 meters above the valley of the Vologne, flanked by two striking mountain peaks in the west and south-west ( Montagne du village , 551 m and Tête de Saint-Pierremont , 550 m). The north-western half of the municipality is covered by forest, to the east of the village the usable land sloping down to the Volognetal consists of pastures and fields. In the extreme northwest, near the source of the Moselle tributary Durbion , the highest point in the municipality is reached at 610 m above sea level.

Fays includes the suburb of La Fortoleuse to the south and the suburbs of Croix Liégey and Le Tinteron to the north of the village center .

Neighboring municipalities of Fays are Grandvillers in the north (point of contact), Bruyères in the northeast, Laval-sur-Vologne in the east, Prey in the southeast, Lépanges-sur-Vologne in the south and west and Viménil in the northwest.

history

The village of Fays (old spelling: Fey and FAIS ) was one of the Ancien Régime to Bailiwick Bruyeres and the chapter in Remiremont dependent parish of Champ-le-Duc . The name of the village is derived from the Latin Fagus (= beech ). Fays does not have a church; the pastoral care is taken over by the parish in the neighboring parish of Laval-sur-Vologne.

Economy and Infrastructure

Today, Fays is predominantly a residential community, whose residents commute to nearby industrial parks in the Vologne and Moselle valleys . In the village there is still a cattle breeding business as main income as well as some holiday homes.

The road from Bruyères to Docelles (D 44), which follows the Volognetal, touches the municipality in the southeast. This road forms one of the two direct connections between Épinal and Saint-Dié , the two largest cities in the department. The nearest train station is in the municipality of Lépanges-sur-Vologne, two kilometers away, on the Arches- Saint-Dié railway line operated by TER Lorraine .
