The group D games of the qualifying round took place from September 1st to 4th, 2016 in the Minsk Arena in the Belarusian capital Minsk . The team from Slovenia secured the tournament victory with a narrow 3-2 win in the penalty shootout over host Belarus and thus one of the three free starting places in the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
The two favorites from Belarus and Slovenia showed no nakedness in their first two tournament games and scored two safe victories each. Only the victory of the Belarusians in the second game against Poland was in jeopardy for a short time after the team had fallen 2-0 down in the opening minutes. But after the first third they turned this into a 4-2 lead. While Denmark secured a disappointing third place by beating Poland in the final game, the hosts and Slovenia played the tournament victory. There the Slovenes took a 2-0 lead early in the second third, but they gambled away this lead in the sold-out Minsk Arena. Ultimately, however, the Slovenes had the better end in the penalty shootout. Rok Tičar , who had also scored the two Slovenian goals in regular time, hit the decisive penalty.
The Belarusian Sjarhej Kaszizyn emerged as the top scorer with six points from the tournament. With four assists he was also the best goal preparer of the competition. The two Slovenes Anže Kopitar and Rok Tičar as well as Kaszizyn's team-mate Andrei Stepanow proved to be the most reliable with three goals. Kopitar was also named the best striker. Gašper Krošelj , who had the best catch rate with 96.3 percent saved shots , was named the best goalkeeper. The naturalized Belarusian Nick Bailen received the award for best defender.

The group E games of the qualifying finals took place from September 1st to 4th, 2016 in the Arēna Rīga in the Latvian capital Riga . With a hard-earned 3-2 victory over hosts Latvia in the final game of the tournament, Germany fought their way to one of the three free starting places for the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
The two top teams in the group - hosts Latvia and Germany - both got off to an impressive start in the tournament. While Germany only needed 30 minutes to decide the game against Japan, Latvia clearly won 8: 1 against Austria, the last Olympic participant. The trend continued on the second day of the tournament. Germany put another exclamation mark in the 6-0 victory over Austria and remained without conceding a goal in the second game. Latvia, on the other hand, had slight problems in the ultimately safe, but still narrow 3: 1 over Japan. On the final day Austria secured third place, while Germany and Latvia played the Olympic ticket among themselves. The Germans got off to a better start and led 2-0 after 25 minutes, before Latvia - each in the majority - first made the connection and equalized at the beginning of the final section. Five minutes before the end, however , Tom Kühnhackl was able to achieve the renewed lead for Germany in the sold-out Arena Riga, which was equivalent to winning the tournament.
The German Felix Schütz secured the title of top scorer and top scorer of the tournament with five points, including four goals. The Latvians Kaspars Daugaviņš and Miks Indrašis as well as Schütz's teammate Leon Draisaitl also collected five points . All three were among the eight players who were able to prepare three hits in the course of the competition. Among the goalkeepers, Germany’s Philipp Grubauer emerged, who blocked 97.0 percent of all shots on his goal and recorded two shutouts . He remained undefeated for almost 155 minutes from the start of the tournament.

Group F games in the qualifying finals took place from September 1st to 4th, 2016 at the Jordal Amfi in the Norwegian capital, Oslo . After a weak start in the tournament, the Norwegian selection was ultimately able to secure the tournament victory with the home advantage behind them and thus one of the three free starting places in the Olympic ice hockey tournament.
The favored Norwegians got off to a weak start in the tournament and were only able to save themselves into overtime with a double strike shortly before the end of the game against Kazakhstan. There they were able to secure at least one bonus point after Kazakhstan won the game 4-3. The French also had more problems with Italy than expected and also only won 2-1 in extra time. On the second day, Norway and France won clear favorites, each 4-1 over their opponents, so that the decision was made in the direct duel in the last tournament game. There the French took the lead in the middle section, but the Norwegians - led by Mats Zuccarello - turned the game around two and a half minutes before the end of the game with an outnumbered goal from Mattias Nørstebø .
Norway's Mats Zuccarello was the driving force behind Norway's successful qualification with five scorer points. His team-mate Patrick Thoresen also stood out with four preparations, while the Kazakh Roman Startschenko was the safest goal scorer with three tournament goals. Among the goalkeepers, the Frenchman Cristobal Huet had the best statistical values with a catch rate of 94.4 percent and an average goal against goals of 1.33.
