|
In 2016/17 the Scottish Premiership was the fourth event as the highest Scottish football division for men. The league was officially played as the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership . It was also the 120th edition of the top football division within the Scottish Football League in which the Scottish champions were determined. It began on August 6, 2016 and ended with the 38th matchday on May 21, 2017.
After the regular season, which was referred to as the 1st round and in which all teams competed three times against each other, the final 2nd round began, which was divided into two groups of the championship and relegation play-offs . The eleventh placed in the Premiership then competed in relegation games , in which the second, third and fourth placed of the championship took part. The bottom of the table was relegated directly.
As a climber from last year's championship , the Glasgow Rangers took part in the Premiership . Four years after their forced relegation, the Rangers achieved promotion to the first division in Scotland, which was the first time since the 2011/12 season for the traditional old firm in the league. From the 2016/17 season, Celtic Park was the first stadium in the United Kingdom to have official standing room again.
The championship won for the 48th time in the club's history Celtic Glasgow. It was also the sixth title in a row. With their 5-0 away win on matchday 30 against the Heart of Midlothian , the Bhoys were able to secure the championship before the second round. Celtic qualified as champions for the following Champions League season 2017/18 . The second- and third- and fourth-place finisher of FC Aberdeen to Glasgow Rangers and FC St. Johnstone qualified for the UEFA Europa League 2017/18 . Inverness Caledonian Thistle went straight to the championship.
