Thornycroft was a British manufacturer of automobiles and trucks .

Company history

The shipbuilding company John I. Thornycroft & Company Limited of Basingstoke began in 1896 with the production of automobiles and commercial vehicles.

In 1914 the production of automobiles was stopped. Trucks were produced until 1977.

The first models were trucks with steam engines . The first automobiles appeared in 1903. The 10 HP model had a two-cylinder engine with 1779 cm³ displacement and the 20 HP model had a four-cylinder engine with 3558 cm³ displacement. In 1906 the four-cylinder models 14/20 HP with 2694 cm³ displacement and 24 HP with 4655 cm³ displacement and the six-cylinder model 36 HP with 6983 cm³ displacement followed. In 1907 the 30 HP with four-cylinder engine and 5187 cm³ displacement was added. In 1908 the 18 HP appeared as the successor to the 14/18 HP with the same engine, the displacement of which was increased in 1909 to 3233 cm³ and in 1911 to 3652 cm³. Also in 1908 appeared as a new six-cylinder model of the 45 HP with 7780 cm³ displacement.

Existing automobiles

13 automobiles of this brand still exist today. Two can be seen at Milestones - Hampshire's Living History Museum in Basingstoke and one at the Heritage Motor Center in Gaydon , Warwickshire . Two vehicles are occasionally used in the London to Brighton Veteran Car Run .
