The Mercedes-Benz CapaCity is a four-axle, low-floor articulated bus for use as a city bus that has been built in series by the Daimler subsidiary EvoBus in Mannheim since April 2007 . It is designed for lines with a high number of passengers and has 176 to 193 seats, of which 37 to 45 are seated and 133 to 156 are standing. The first generation, built until the beginning of 2015, is 19.54 m long and has three or four doors. In 2015 the second generation of the CapaCity with a Euro VI engine came onto the market, of which the 21.00 m long model CapaCity L was presented first, followed by the 19.73 m long modelCapaCity standard variant. Both new models are available with four or five doors.

Since the vehicles extend beyond the maximum permitted length of 18.75 m, a special permit is required for public use. The steered fourth axle in the trailer increases the permissible total weight to 32 tons. Turning is made easier by a camera at the rear of the bus, which shows the driver on a monitor which course the bus will follow if the steering angle remains the same. The chassis has a roll / pitch control, which was previously only used in fuel cell buses with a high roof load. This should ensure safety and increased driving comfort through an electronically controlled variable identifier of the shock absorbers. A six-cylinder in-line diesel engine (Euro VI: OM 470 ; Euro V / EEV: OM 457 hLA ) drives the third axle.

commitment

Germany

The CapaCity was presented for the first time in November 2005 . One of the first companies in Germany to use a CapaCity is the private company Willy Hummert from Dissen am Teutoburg Forest . The keys were handed over in summer 2008; Another 4-door model followed later, which was christened the “stretch bus”.

From August 2008, the Stuttgart trams started using four CapaCity in regular service on lines 42, 72 and 81; In 2009 four more vehicles were ordered; Another CapaCity followed in 2010 , which was previously used as a demonstration car. All nine buses have three doors. Since the timetable change in December 2010, the CapaCity have only been running on the busiest downtown Stuttgart line 42, as operations on lines 72 and 81 were not profitable. At the end of 2017 / beginning of 2018, all nine buses were taken out of service early - these were replaced by ten new CapaCity with four doors, as the Stuttgart trams only use vehicles with diesel engines of the Euro VI standard or alternative drives due to the fine dust issue in the city center would like.

A CapaCity of the Rottenburg bus company Groß has been running on line 18 for Tübingen's city traffic since December 9, 2008, and another four vehicles were delivered to the Kocher bus company on February 7, 2009 and have been running mainly on line 5 to the clinics since then. In December 2011 another three were added.

After a positive test phase at the beginning of 2010 on lines 5 and 45 of ASEAG in Aachen , on which double articulated buses of the VanHool AGG 300 types are otherwise used, a vehicle was initially procured in 2011. At the end of 2013, six more CapaCities were ordered, this time as a 4-door version.

Since November 2011, five CapaCity have been operating in Darmstadt on the H line operated by Heag Mobibus . The reason given is the maintenance of the 15-minute cycle with increased traffic.

A CapaCity L was used by the Berlin transport company for two weeks for test purposes at the end of August 2015 before it was delivered to its actual destination, the Hamburger Hochbahn . Hochbahn itself tested the CapaCity L in both the 4- and 5-door versions on Metrobus line 5 until autumn 2017. In September 2018, around 30 buses of the 5-door variant were already in regular service in Hamburg. By the end of 2019, the fleet is to be expanded to a total of 90 buses.

The CapaCity L was also tested in Dresden . The Dresden public transport company then decided to purchase eleven vehicles of the 4-door variant. You have been traveling on the bus routes with the highest demand in the Saxon state capital since January 2017, in particular on route 62.
