Production period: since 1996
Class : Van
Body versions : Station wagon

The Renault Scénic is a compact van from the French car manufacturer Renault . The so-called Monospace, which has been in production since the end of 1996, is manufactured in Douai in northern France near Lille .

history

The study was presented at the IAA in 1991 , and it was launched in Europe at the end of 1996. The Scénic was also voted Car of the Year 1997.

It is based on the Renault Mégane and was sold as Renault Mégane Scénic for the first three years until the facelift in late summer 1999 . Since then it has only been called Scénic , and the name Mégane has since been embossed into a plastic part next to the rear windows.

In the summer of 2003, the compact van was completely redesigned and named Scénic II. In the spring of 2004, the seven-seat Grand Scénic variant was added. The two additional seats in the third row of seats can be lowered into the trunk floor. In September 2006 the model was slightly revised. A five-seater from the Grand Scénic with the designation XXL is also on offer.

In Taiwan, the Taiwanese car manufacturer Yulon produced the Renault Scénic in its two generations in phase II from 2003 to 2009. However, the manufacturer still used the original name of the previous model and marketed the compact van under the name Renault Mégane Scénic .

The Scénic was the first successful compact van on the European market and was also available early on in an all-wheel drive version, which was widely praised in the specialist press. With regard to comfort, the drive train was provided with a Hardy disc (joint disc from the Süddeutsche joint disc factory SGF).

The following information on the individual Scénic models relates to the versions that were offered on the German and Austrian markets. Due to the large variety of special models and engines in all other European countries, it would go beyond the scope of this article to go into all the variants ever produced.

Phase I.

The second generation Renault Scénic was introduced in June 2003. Compared to its predecessor, the rear section in particular had been changed and based on the design of the second Renault Mégane . Equipment details and technology were also adopted in large numbers from the Mégane, which had come onto the market six months earlier. New was an electronic parking brake that came from Renault Espace and Renault Laguna and had been developed by Küster Automotive Control Systems GmbH .

In April 2004, the Grand Scénic was added, which was 23 cm longer and optionally had seven seats (the two rear seats can be lowered into the trunk).

As part of a slight facelift, equipment details and the color of the rear lights were changed in early 2005. The interior also saw detail changes. The headrests on the rear seats were equipped with a new technology: the headrests could be opened, behind them there were two padded supports on the sides. These served on the one hand as head and neck supports, and on the other hand as protection against the head jumping back and forth too quickly in the event of a collision ( whiplash ). These headrests were available as options and had to be paid for.

Phase II

In September 2006 Scénic and Grand Scénic were modified (phase II) . Essentially, the radiator openings have been expanded, the exterior mirrors are now painted in the same color as the car on each model and the taillights are now also available in LED.

The navigation system has been improved ( Carminat 3, partly also Carminat 2 Bluetooth ). The dimensions have not changed since the first generation, Extreme and Prèstige were added as equipment variants . Some of the diesel engines are available with a particle filter (FAP).

Recall campaign

On June 29, 2010, Renault announced that 695,000 vehicles in the production period June 2003 to June 2005 would be called to the authorized workshops for inspection due to possible damage to the electric parking brake. This is necessary because the electronically actuated parking brake could release itself while driving, which in an emergency could lead to the rear wheels locking and the vehicle breaking away. In the workshops, the control unit responsible for the parking brake is checked and, if necessary, the parking brake is reprogrammed.

The third edition of the Renault Scénic was introduced in April 2009.

As with the previous generation, there are two body styles (Scénic and Grand Scénic), but they differ more clearly. The design was adapted to the Renault Mégane III. In the interior, the switches, air conditioning, steering wheel, etc. are identical to the Megane III. As with the little brother, the lamps at the front can now be changed yourself.

As of the “Dynamique” line, bi-xenon headlights are optionally available. The package then also includes daytime running lights in the form of two 21 W lamps in the main headlight.

At the end of 2010, Renault introduced a 6-speed dual clutch transmission for the first time at an additional cost for the 110 hp 1.5 dCi.

Equipment variants
  • Authentique (in Austria)
  • Expression
  • Dynamique
  • Luxe (in Germany)
  • Privilège (in Austria and Switzerland)

Expression (or Authentique) is the basic and Luxe (or Privilège) the highest equipment. New features include a TFT instrument panel, a Carminat 3 or TomTom navigation system (standard in the Luxe version, available as a package in Austria and Switzerland), and an optional reversing camera (only in conjunction with the Carminat TomTom or Carminat 3 navigation system).

Bose Edition special model

The special Bose Edition model has been available since mid-March 2011. Based on the Dynamique equipment variant, a Bose surround sound system, a navigation system, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels and other extras were also installed.

Model maintenance

2012

A subtle facelift was carried out in January 2012.

Supporting systems such as Lane Keeping Assist or High Beam Assist complete the equipment. In addition, some models are again optionally equipped with bi-xenon headlights. LED daytime running lights as standard with almost all equipment variants (even without special equipment bi-xenon).

As a technical innovation, the Scénic and Grand Scénic will feature the Energy motor family. In addition to the 130 hp diesel with 1.6 liter displacement, a 1.2 l petrol engine with 115 hp will also be available for the first time.

2013

Another facelift followed in April 2013, in which the radiator grille was redesigned. In addition, a new gasoline engine is offered and the new SUV-like XMOD version is introduced.

Renault presented the fourth generation of the Scénic at the Geneva Motor Show 2016. In October 2016, the Grand Scénic was presented to the public at the Mondial de l'Automobile in Paris . The Scénic has been with dealers since November 15, 2016, the long version followed in December.

The Scénic is offered as standard with only 195 mm wide but 20 inch wheels and two-tone paintwork. Light and rain sensors , the hands-free keycard , 2-zone automatic air conditioning and the high-beam assistant are also included as standard. Full LED headlights and a panoramic roof are also optionally available.

At the market launch, there was a choice between two 1.2-liter gasoline engines with 85 kW (115 PS) and 97 kW (132 PS) and three diesel engines with an output between 81 kW (110 PS) and 118 kW (160 PS). The combined fuel consumption over 100 km is between 3.6 and 5.8.

A mild hybrid diesel variant of the Scénic and Grand Scénic ( dCi 110 Hybrid Assist ) with a 48-volt sub-electrical system has been available since March 2017 . This makes the Scénic the first series production vehicle with a 48-V mild hybrid drive. Instead of the alternator , a belt-driven starter generator from Continental with a continuous output of 6 kW (temporarily 10 kW) is used. The coolant-cooled 48-V starter generator can convert a large part of the braking energy into electricity. In acceleration phases, the starter generator can call up the recuperated energy, which is temporarily stored in a lithium-ion battery with an energy content of 0.5 kWh, in order to support the combustion engine. Overall, the Scénic's fuel consumption drops to 3.6 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers according to the NEDC .

RX4

Renault Scénic RX4 (2000-2003)
Rear view

The Renault Scénic RX4 is a so-called Sports Utility Vehicle in compact van design , which was produced from autumn 2000 to mid-2003 based on the Scénic I Phase II . Compared to the basic model, the RX4 has a 6 cm higher ground clearance , a circumferential body protection strip with ram protection and a chassis with permanent all-wheel drive developed by the Austrian vehicle company Magna Steyr , which is driven via an electronically controlled differential gear with viscous coupling . The viscous coupling distributes the engine's torque depending on the traction ratios between the front and rear axles.

Due to the larger space requirement of the reinforced rear suspension, the spare tire was mounted on the rear door that opens to the side. In contrast to full - fledged off-road vehicles , the RX4 has neither a gear reduction nor a limited slip differential . The two engines on offer generate little torque at low speeds , so the vehicle is only suitable for off-road use to a limited extent. For this reason, Renault warns in the introduction to the operating manual : “Despite the high ground level, these vehicles are not off-road vehicles.” In addition, the four standard disc brakes are undersized in the limit range for the 1750 kg vehicle.

Conquest

Renault Scénic Conquest (2007-2009)
Rear view

From June 2007 the Scenic II with the additional designation Conquest was also offered in an off-road vehicle look (in Austria as Crossroad ). The chassis, which is 20 millimeters higher, is tighter; on the outside, the body has more robust bumpers, wheel arch protection strips and roof rails (in chrome with black brackets). There are 17 ″ aluminum rims and parking sensors as standard.

The model was officially presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2007.

With the switch to the third generation, production of the Scénic Conquest ended in early 2009.

ZEV H2

The Scénic ZEV H2 is a fuel cell-equipped prototype from the Renault-Nissan Alliance. This zero emission vehicle is based on a Grand Scénic that is 60 millimeters higher. The fittings previously installed in the Scénic are still used in this vehicle.

This prototype is powered by a 90 kW (122 PS) electric motor on a battery with a capacity of 25 kWh and an operating voltage of 400 volts. The battery is fed by the fuel cell. When braking, electrical energy is fed back into the battery ( recuperation ).

XMOD

Renault Scénic XMOD (2013-2016)

The Scénic XMOD came onto the market in April 2013 with the facelift of the third generation as a crossover addition.

This was presented at the Geneva Motor Show. As striking differences, it has independent bumpers with underbody protection, higher ground clearance, independent wheels and roof rails.
