The 2000 Academy Awards took place on March 26, 2000 for the penultimate time in the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles . It was the 72nd Annual Academy Awards . In the year of the award, awards are always given to films from the previous year, in this case the films from 1999.

The big winner of the award ceremony was the film American Beauty , which received five trophies, including four of the Big Five Oscars (Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Original Screenplay). Technically the most convincing was the film Matrix , which received four awards (Best Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing, Best Visual Effects). God's work and the devil's contribution and Topsy-Turvy - Upside down were each awarded two times.
