The CLA model from the manufacturer Mercedes-Benz is referred to internally as Mercedes-Benz 117 . The four-door mid-range vehicle ( C 117 ) was presented to the public on January 15, 2013 as part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin and launched across Europe on April 13, 2013 after production had started on January 25, 2013. The only production site is the factory in Kecskemét, Hungary . The manufacturer calls the four-door sedan a four-door coupé .

A first study called the Concept Style Coupé was presented at the Beijing Motor Show in April 2012. The C 117 is the third model based on the modular front-wheel drive architecture (MFA). After the success of the CLA , a station wagon variant was presented by Mercedes-Benz at the end of 2014 . The Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake (X 117) is reminiscent of a coupé in its detailed elements such as the frameless side windows, but at the same time offers the variability and utility of a station wagon. The market launch took place on March 28, 2015.

On March 16, 2016, Mercedes-Benz published information about the revised version, which had its world premiere at the New York International Auto Show 2016. It was available to order from April 2016. In July 2016 she came to the dealers.

design

Exterior

The basic features of the design and the proportions of the CLA are based on the larger and higher positioned CLS . The concept of the four-door coupé, which was established in the luxury class with the CLS in 2004 , is also to be implemented in the middle class.

The C 117 has a long bonnet, narrow window graphics and frameless side windows, which represent a unique selling point in this class. The front shows similarities to the A-Class , but there are differences, for example the slightly different shape of the headlights or the side air inlets in the apron. The radiator grille with the Mercedes-Benz star integrated in the radiator grille is not optically integrated into the bonnet, but designed separately.

In the side view, the beads on the flanks that run towards each other towards the rear are noticeable. The roof is flattened, as is typical of the coupé, and the arched rear ends sloping slightly in an indicated rump. The transition to the rear is smooth thanks to the wide, almond-shaped rear lights. The fuel filler cap is on the left-hand side, which is not typical for Mercedes-Benz .

The design of the interior is strongly based on that of the A and B class . The basic version of the C 117 has a three-spoke steering wheel with aluminum double struts from the CLS . The instrument cluster has two analog round instruments, each containing a further small round instrument, between which there is a 11.4 cm multifunctional display. Similar to the B-Class, there is a large decorative element on the instrument panel . The central display with a diagonal of 14.7 cm in the base and 17.8 cm if the navigation system is selected, which is located above the three ventilation nozzles in a cross design made of aluminum, is now integrated into the upper part of the instrument panel. As of September 2014, the CLA 200 CDI will have a displacement of 2.1 liters instead of the previous 1.8 liters and has since been offered with all-wheel drive as the CLA 200 CDI 4MATIC . Manual transmission

A newly developed 6-speed manual transmission is used as the transmission for the two weaker Otto engines. The three-shaft gear unit with the designation F-SG 310 is very compact with a length of 345 mm and has a low dry weight of 46 kg. The upper shaft, which includes reverse gear and gears three and four, does not run in the oil bath. This reduces the drag torque and the shifting comfort is also given in cold operation. The first two gears are synchronized via a triple cone, while the following gears have a double cone. These measures also increase shift comfort. A magnet on the selector shaft, which is detected by a Hall sensor , ensures that the current gear position is recognized. The automatic start-stop system and the reversing lights, which are standard in all models, are controlled by this. Gears are engaged by cables while the clutch is operated hydraulically. The shift forks are made of cast aluminum and are mounted on roller bearings in the transmission. This storage reduces the switching forces.

Double clutch

As automatic a specially comes from Daimler -developed dual clutch transmission used. The transmission called 7G-DCT is installed as standard in vehicles with the most powerful diesel and gasoline engines and is also available for all other engines at an additional cost. The CLA 180 BlueEFFICIENCY Edition is an exception and is only available with the 6-speed manual transmission.

The 7G-DCT is a three-shaft transmission that is divided into two halves. The sub-transmissions each have their own multi-plate clutch that runs in an oil bath , which means that gear changes are possible without interrupting tractive power. The gear spread was selected to be high at 7.99 in order to provide sufficient torque in low gears and at the same time lower the engine speed in the higher gears. The 7G-DCT is 367 mm long and weighs 86 kg. In spite of an oil filling quantity of only 6 liters of hydraulic oil, sufficient cooling is guaranteed because the oil is actively cooled. In addition to a mechanically driven oil pump, there is an additional electric pump that supplies the transmission with oil during a stop process when the engine is switched off. This means that restarting can take place without delay and the standard start-stop function can be implemented without any problems. In addition, the electrical auxiliary pump supports the mechanical pump at high loads. The hydraulics of the mechanical parking lock are controlled electronically, which means that the gear selector lever can be positioned on the right behind the steering wheel. This created additional storage space in the center console.

The driver can choose between three transmission programs. The Economy program switches fully automatically and is designed for an economical driving style. In Sport mode , the transmission also shifts automatically, with the reaction times being shortened for a sporty driving style. In the third mode, the driver shifts the gears manually using shift paddles behind the steering wheel. In the automatic shift programs, the driver can also carry out manual shift interventions, with the automatic mode being reactivated after 10 seconds without any further shift operations. This time is extended when driving downhill or on winding roads. Permanent communication between the transmission and engine control unit ensures improved efficiency.
