John Phillips (politician, 1887)
John Phillips (born September 11, 1887 in Wilkes-Barre , Pennsylvania , † December 18, 1983 in Palm Springs , California ) was an American politician . Between 1943 and 1957 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .
Career
John Phillips attended the public schools in his home country and then until 1910 Haverford College . During the First World War he served in the Adjutant General's Office of the US Army . In 1924 he moved to California, where he worked as a business analyst and rancher. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1930 to 1932 he was a member of the Banning Town Council . Between 1932 and 1936 he was a member of the California State Assembly ; thereafter he was a member of the State Senate from 1936 to 1942 . Between 1944 and 1960 he participated as a delegate at all Republican National Conventions .
In the 1942 congressional elections , Phillips was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the then newly established 22nd constituency of California , where he took up his new mandate on January 3, 1943. After six re-elections, he was able to complete seven legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1957 . Since 1953 he represented the newly created 29th district of his state there. His time in Congress included the end of World War II , the beginning of the Cold War , the Korean War and, domestically, the civil rights movement . In 1956 he gave up another candidacy.
From 1952 to 1961, John Phillips was a member of the American Battle Monuments Commission , an authority that primarily looks after the American battlefields of the two world wars as museum sites. He then became a public relations consultant. He died in Palm Springs on December 18, 1983.
