- February 22 : The world premiere of the opera Judith by Natanael Berg takes place at the Kungliga Teatern in Stockholm.
- February 28 : The opera Bloud (The Gate) by Josef Bohuslav Foerster is premiered at the National Theater in Prague .
- March 27 : The world premiere of the opera Rossini in Naples by Bernhard Paumgartner takes place at the Stadttheater Zürich .
- May 26th : The opera Doktor Johannes Faust by Hermann Reutter is premiered at the Städtische Bühnen in Frankfurt am Main under the direction of Walter Felsenstein . The libretto comes from Ludwig Andersen alias Ludwig Strecker the Younger . It is based on the old puppet show Doctor Faust in the version by Karl Simrock .
- November 15 : The world premiere of the opera Enoch Arden or the Möwenschrei by Ottmar Gerster takes place in Düsseldorf. The libretto was written by Karl Michael von Levetzow . It is based on the ballad Enoch Arden written in 1864 by the English poet Alfred Tennyson . The work became one of the most frequently performed contemporary operas for a short time, but was soon forgotten.
- December 6th : The opera Schwarzer Peter by Norbert Schultze is premiered at the Hamburg State Opera.

- April 11 : The musical On Your Toes by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Lorenz Hart premieres on Broadway at the Imperial Theater. With the book musical , created in collaboration with George Abbott , Rodgers and Hart attempt for the first time to use ballet as a plot-based part of the play structure. The choreography is by George Balanchine .
- October 29th : Red, Hot and Blue! , a musical comedy with the music and lyrics by Cole Porter and a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse , premieres at the Alvin Theater in New York. Ethel Merman stars alongside Jimmy Durante and Bob Hope .
Instrumental music
- April 19 : The Violin Concerto by Alban Berg after the composer's death, led by Hermann Scherchen at the music festival in the Palau de la Música Catalana premiered in Barcelona.
- May 2 : The musical fairy tale Peter and the Wolf by Sergei Prokofiev premiered after the return of the composer in the Soviet Union, encouraged by Natalija Saz , artistic director of the Moscow Central Children's Theater for children with the instruments of the symphony orchestra to get acquainted. The piece attracts little attention.
Jazz / swing
- January : With The Music Goes Round and Round , Tommy Dorsey and his small information Clambake Seven can place his first number 1 hit in the national charts; Edythe Wright is the band vocalist.
- February 15 : Benny Goodman & His Orchestra land a number 1 hit in the United States with the Walter Donaldson title It's Been So Long . At the end of the month, Goodman repeated the No. 1 hit with "Goofy Goofy," again with Helen Ward as the singer.
- April 4th : Andy Kirk & His Twelve Clouds of Joy are the first to hit the US charts with the swing classic Christopher Columbus ; Benny Goodman, Fletcher Henderson and Teddy Wilson follow , all from April 25, 1936.
- May 2nd : You was originally written as a choir song by Walter Donaldson for the film musical The Great Ziegfeld ; Tommy Dorsey & His Orchestra have another number 1 hit in the USA. That same week, Fats Waller had a hit with All My Life , a song from the movie Laughing Irish Eyes
- May 30th : Jimmy Dorsey has his first number 1 hit with Alan Jay Lerner's It Is True What they say About Dixie? , a piece that many dance bands had in their repertoire.
- June 27 : With the ballad " These Foolish Things (Remind Me of You) " arranged by Jimmy Mundy , Benny Goodman made it to number 1 on the charts for the fifth time. The song soon becomes a popular jazz standard . In the same week, Fats Waller's It's a Sin to Tell a Lie entered the US charts and ended up also at position 1.
- July 4 : Andy Kirk has his first number 1 hit with Gus Kahn's Until the Real Thing Comes Along (It Will Have to Do) , a track that also has success in versions by Jan Garber , Fats Waller and Erskine Hawkins becomes.
- September 12th : Billie Holiday made it to # 12 on the US charts with her version of Gershwin's classic Summertime . The song from Porgy and Bess first made it back onto the charts in the late 1950s, but it became a popular standard.
- October 3rd : Benny Goodman has another number 1 hit with the song You Turned the Tables On Me from the film musical Sing, Sing, Sing . Band singer Helen Ward disappoints all male fans when she then temporarily retires from the stage to get married.
- October 24 : Jimmy Lunceford & His Orchestra successfully hits the charts for Will Hudson / Mitchell Parish's “Organ Grinder's Swing”; Sy Oliver first arranges the soon-to-be popular version in the studio.
- November 14 : The Way You Look Tonight is a hit song from the movie Swing Time , with which Teddy Wilson and Billie Holiday hit # 3 on the US charts. Even Fred Astaire and Guy Lombardo are successful with the song.
- December 19 : Teddy Wilson and Lady Day hit the charts again with I Can't Give You Anything but Love , which stayed in the charts for four weeks and reached # 5.

- January 4 : The US magazine The Billboard publishes the first time in the world a hit parade of popular music.
- January 26 : After the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Shostakovich has celebrated one success after the other since its premiere in 1934 , Stalin , Molotov , Mikoyan and Zhdanov attend the performance of the opera in the Bolshoi Theater in their government box. After the performance, Stalin disappears without having received the composer in his box. On January 28, Pravda will bring the unsigned article “ Chaos Instead of Music ” about the work. As a result, all performances are stopped. One after another, critics apologize and stumble upon their previous opinions. The work cannot be performed again until 1963 in a form that has been thoroughly revised by the composer.
