propaganda
- June 29 : The propaganda song From Finland to the Black Sea by Herms Niel and Norbert Schultze, commissioned by Joseph Goebbels , with the choirs of the Berlin State Opera and the Deutsche Oper Berlin as well as a large orchestra is broadcast for the first time. At the end of the song, the quote from Franz Liszt's Les Preludes , known as Russia Fanfare, is added, which from now on introduces the special reports of the Wehrmacht High Command on German radio. At the beginning of the war another signal was used, which comes from the song Die Wacht am Rhein and was therefore also called France Fanfare .
World premieres
- January 23rd : The world premiere of the musical Lady in the Dark with music by Kurt Weill and lyrics by Ira Gershwin takes place at the Alvin Theater in New York. The book is by Moss Hart , who is also directing it. Gertrude Lawrence , Danny Kaye , Macdonald Carey and Victor Mature play in the original cast .
- February 5th : The opera Fürstin Tarakanowa by Boris Blacher is premiered in Wuppertal.
- April 5 : The world premiere of the ballet Verklungene Feste by Pia and Pino Mlakar (libretto and choreography) to the music of François Couperin, arranged by Richard Strauss, takes place at the National Theater in Munich .
- April 30th : The world premiere of the operetta Der Reiter der Kaiserin by August Pepöck based on motifs from the novel Der Kerzlmacher von St. Stephan by Alfons von Czibulka takes place at the Raimundtheater in Vienna.
- October 11 : The opera Die Hexe von Passau by Ottmar Gerster is premiered in Düsseldorf.
- October 18 : The German premiere of Kurt Atterberg's opera Aladin takes place in Chemnitz.
- December 25 : In the USA, Bing Crosby presented the Irving Berlin song White Christmas for the first time on a radio broadcast .
