- March 5 : The 7th Symphony ( Leningrad Symphony ) by Dmitri Dmitrijewitsch Shostakovich is premiered in Kuibyshev by the orchestra of the Bolshoi Theater under the direction of Samuil Samossud , which was relocated there because of the war . On March 27th a performance in Moscow follows. The music is so captivating that even an air alarm cannot move the audience to go to the shelters.
Opera
- January 10 : The world premiere of the opera Birgitta by Natanael Berg takes place at the Royal Opera in Stockholm.
- October 28 : Capriccio , the last opera by Richard Strauss , is premiered at the National Theater in Munich . The libretto was created between 1934 and 1941 as a collaborative effort by several authors: The original idea came from Stefan Zweig ; At his request, Joseph Gregor made several designs. The rest of the execution was carried out by Clemens Krauss and Richard Strauss with the assistance of Hans Swarowsky .
- October 31 : The opera Die Zauberinsel by Heinrich Sutermeister based on the drama Der Sturm by William Shakespeare premieres at the Semperoper in Dresden .

- November 28 : The world premiere of the operetta Manina by Nico Dostal based on the libretto by Hans Adler and Alexander Lix takes place in the Admiralspalast in Berlin.

- January 10th : Woody Herman and His Orchestra got into the Billboard chart with "Blues in the Night" , in which he should climb to # 1.
- February 10 : Glenn Miller receives the first gold record in music history for the song Chattanooga Choo Choo .
- May 29 : Bing Crosby and other contributors record Irving Berlin's composition White Christmas at the Decca Studios in New York City . Over time, the song will become the world's most successful Christmas single commercially . On November 21, it reached number 1 on the charts in the United States for the first time and stayed there for ten weeks.
- August 1st : " (I've Got a Gal in) Kalamazoo " in the version by Glenn Miller hits the American pop charts and became a million dollar hit for the band leader.
- October 24th : Earl Hines and His Orchestra (vocals Billy Eckstine ) joins the Harlem Hit Parade with “Stormy Monday Blues”, Billie Holiday (with Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra) with “Trav'lin Light” . Both then reached # 1 on the charts.

- April 9 : Igor Stravinsky's Circus Polka premieres at a performance by Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus in New York .
- August 8 : The Disney film Bambi also premiered the theme song Love Is a Song (That Never Ends) by Frank Churchill and Larry Morey . The composer, with whose work Walt Disney was dissatisfied, took his own life on May 14th .
