Paul Cook (born March 3, 1943 in Meriden , Connecticut ) is an American politician . He has represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives since 2013 .

Career

Paul Cook attended Southern Connecticut State University in New Haven until 1966 , where he trained as an educator. In the same year he joined the United States Marine Corps , of which he was a member between 1966 and 1992. He rose to the rank of colonel. For his military achievements during this time he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart (2 times).

After the end of his military service, he moved permanently to California. There he studied until 1996 at California State University in San Bernardino and then until 2000 at the University of California in Riverside political science. Cook served as the director of the Yucca Valley Chamber of Commerce in 1993 and 1994 ; from 1998 to 2002 he taught at Copper Mountain College . Since 2002 he has lectured at the University of California at Riverside on political violence and terrorism. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . From 1998 to 2006 he was a member of the Yucca Valley Parish Council. He later became mayor there. He was a member of the California State Assembly from 2006 to 2012 . There he belonged to a total of ten committees.

In the 2012 congressional elections , Cook was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eighth constituency of California , where he succeeded Nancy Pelosi , who moved to the twelfth district, on January 3, 2013 . In the runoff election against Gregg Imus, also a Republican, he received 58 percent of the vote. Prior to the reorganization of the Congressional constituencies, the no longer running Jerry Lewis represented the area. After two re-elections so far in 2014 and 2016, he can continue to exercise his office today. His new legislative term runs until January 3, 2019 with the option of a further candidacy in 2018.
