William Marshall "Bill" Thomas (born December 6, 1941 in Wallace , Shoshone County , Idaho ) is an American politician . Between 1979 and 2007 he represented the state of California in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Bill Thomas attended Santa Ana Community College until 1961 and then studied at San Francisco State University until 1965 . From 1965 to 1974 he was a faculty instructor at Bakersfield College . He then began a political career as a member of the Republican Party . From 1974 to 1978 he was a member of the California State Assembly .

In the 1978 congressional election , Thomas was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 18th electoral district of California , where he succeeded the late William M. Ketchum on January 3, 1979 . After 13 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 14 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2007 . From 1983 to 1993 he represented the 20th district of his state. After that he was a member of parliament for the 21st and then for the 22nd constituency until 2003. Thomas was chairman of the rules of procedure committee between 1995 and 2001 ; from 2001 to 2007 he headed the Committee on Ways and Means . During his time as a congressman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell . In 1992 he was involved in the Rubbergate scandal.

In 2006, Thomas decided not to run again. He is married and has two grown children.
