Howard "Buck" McKeon (born September 9, 1938 in Tujunga , California ) is an American politician ( Republican Party ). Between 1993 and 2015 he represented the 25th congressional district of the State of California in the US House of Representatives .

Life

Howard McKeon was born in northern Los Angeles and attended Verdugo Hills High School in Tujunga. He then studied agriculture at Brigham Young University and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1985 . He is married to Patricia Kunz and is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .

McKeon initially embarked on a career as a businessman. From 1979 to 1987 he was a board member of the Santa Clarita Valley School Board ; then he served as mayor of Santa Clarita until 1992 . In this place he was also a member of the city council and worked there in the banking industry. From 1988 to 1992 McKeon sat on the executive committee of the Republican Party of California.

In 1992 McKeon applied to succeed the no longer running Democrat Edward R. Roybal in the US House of Representatives. He won the election against the Democratic candidate James Gilmartin with 52 percent of the vote, entered Congress on January 3, 1993 and has since been confirmed eight times in his mandate. He last won in 2008 against the Democrat Jackie Conaway, with a 57.7 percent share of the vote, his worst result since his first election. From 2006 to 2007 McKeon chaired the Education and Working Committee in the House of Representatives; from June 2009 to January 2011 he was the highest-ranking opposition representative ( ranking member ) in the armed forces committee . From January 2011 to January 2015 he chaired the committee.

McKeon criticized Barack Obama's plans to close the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base prison camp because Obama had not presented an alternative to what to do with the prisoners or future prisoners of terrorism. In 2014 he decided not to run again. Therefore, he left the Congress on January 3, 2015.
