List of trams in America

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list contains the existing ones in America (shown in bold) and former tram operators . In addition to the cities in which they were located, additional information is provided, as far as possible, about the gauge, the type of drive, opening and setting dates and, if necessary, about the operation. The data relate to the greatest possible extent to the entire operating time, for example all drive types are listed and not the last used; the same applies to different gauges. If available, the link to the individual establishments provides detailed information.

Brazil

It is often not clear in Brazilian history where the tram ends and the railroad begins. For example, Allen Morrison lists the Estrada de Ferro a Campos do Jordão (EFCJ) as a tram. However, this does not seem coherent if, for example, France's Chemin de fer de Saint-Georges à La Mure et Gap (SG-LM-G) or the Swiss Chemin de Fer de Brigue à Visp et Zermatt (BVZ) are considered railways. The EFCJ is a pure high-mountain railway that only runs in Campos do Jordão itself, 1,700 m above sea level, with tramcars.

Local railways such as those of Morro Velho or the Ramal Férreo Campineiro, the island railroad Tramway Guarujá (the word tramway in Brazil has more of the meaning of light rail than tram), as well as the S-Bahn lines between Santos and São Vicente and between São Paulo and Santo Amaro (the latter was only referred to as a tram after Santo Amaro was incorporated into the São Paulo district), as trams. Nobody in Brazil understands why Allen Morrison lists the Cantareira Tramway (TC; 30 km between São Paulo and Guarulhos) as a tram, while Charles R. Small uses the TC, just like the estrada de Ferro Perus-Pirapora (EFPP; 30 km between São Paulo and Cajamar) as a railway.

It is best to first read the description of a train carefully and then decide whether you are dealing with a train or a tram. Safest clue: Ferrocarril on behalf of the company refers to trams, Tramway is a local train, island train, local train, in short, a small train.
