Fontaine is a French commune in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes in the department of Isère . The city is the administrative seat of the cantons Fontaine-Seyssinet and Fontaine-Vercors in the Arrondissement of Grenoble .
geography
The city with 22,523 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) is located opposite Grenoble on the left bank of the Drac on the Vercors massif . Parts of the municipality belong to the Vercors Regional Nature Park .
history
The area was already settled by Homo sapiens in the Magdalenian period (between 15,000 and 13,000 BC). Traces of the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Ages can also be found.
In the Middle Ages , the fiefs of the Lords of Sassenage spread across the Isère and Drac valleys. The rural population was obliged to pay taxes to them.
The first bridge was built here in 1827. From the end of the 19th century Fontaine developed into a banlieue of the city of Grenoble .
