The J.League Division 1 2001 was the ninth season of the highest division of the Japanese J.League and the third under the name Division 1 . Sixteen clubs took part in it. The regular season was played in two half-series and began on March 10, 2001. After the end of the second half-series on November 24, 2001, the winners of the two half-series, Júbilo Iwata and Kashima Antlers , played in two games for the Japanese championship. These finals were played after the regular season on December 2nd and 8th. After a 2-2 win in Iwata, Kashima won the second leg 1-0 and thus defended the title, for the Antlers it was their fourth championship.
Relegated to the J.League Division 2 in 2002 were Avispa Fukuoka and Cerezo Osaka .
mode
As in the previous season , the clubs faced each other twice, once at home and once away, but both half-series were counted as separate championships. If there was a tie after 90 minutes, the playing time was extended by 15 minutes twice, whereby the golden goal rule was applied. If it was still a draw after that, the game was counted as such.
There were three points for a win after regular time and two points for a win in extra time; in the event of a tie there was a counter for each team. The table for each semi-series was created according to the following criteria:
- Number of points scored
- Goal difference
- Goals scored
- Results of the games among themselves
- Decision game or coin toss
After the end of a half series, the club qualified with the most points for the finals of the Japanese championship. The winner of the finals qualified as Japanese champions for the AFC Champions League 2002/03 . To determine the two relegated teams, a table was formed over the entire season after the end of the season according to the same criteria as stated above, the two worst teams had to go into the second division.
Attendees
A total of sixteen teams took part in the season. No longer there were the bottom of the previous season, Kawasaki Frontale and the penultimate Kyōto Purple Sanga , both of which had to relegate to the J.League Division 2 in 2001 . J.League founding member Kyōto ended eight years of membership in Division 1 with relegation, while Kawasaki Frontale returned to the second division after only one year at the highest level.
The two relegated teams were replaced by Consadole Sapporo , the champion of Division 2 in 2000 , and the runner-up Urawa Red Diamonds . Consadole managed to return to Division 1 after two years in the lower house, Urawa succeeded in returning immediately after relegating from the upper house in 1999.
In addition, the other Kawasakis team changed locations. Due to economic problems and increasing problems in gaining support from home fans, Verdy Kawasaki decided to move to Tokyo at the beginning of the 2001 season. Before the founding of the J.League, the team already played there under the name Yomiuri FC , the new one Name Tokyo Verdy 1969 was supposed to build on this tradition. However, the change of location only bore fruit to a limited extent; the number of spectators rose as intended, but remained significantly below original expectations due to city rivals FC Tokyo, who had also been promoted to Division 1 a year earlier .
